Mail won't remain on selected email

After I use the search function in Mac Mail, highlight the email I wish to view, then x-out the search term, Mail does not remain on the email selected from the search results. Mail resorts to the last email I had selected prior to the search. In the past, Mail would remain on the email selected after the search results. How can I restore this function?
