quicktime movie recording w/iPad Pro 2021 - two beeps that won't stop

so in making a movie recording using my new 2021 iPad Pro 12.9", there are two loud and deep beeps that happen about every minute or so, which obviously I don't want. Audio is otherwise normally picked up. I do not have this problem while making a movie recording with my iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Hello, kismetcapitan! Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

We've reviewed your question and it looks like you hear a beeping noise while recording on your iPad. It's understandable that you'd want this resolved, so allow us to assist with that. Please start by taking a look here: Record a movie in QuickTime Player on Mac. This article walks you through how to make a movie using the built-in camera on your Mac or using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

You mentioned that this does not occur when you are recording using your iPhone, Does it happen when recording just on your Mac, without your iPad being used?

If you have follow-up questions, please let us know. We're here for you. Have a fantastic day!

I record screen captures from my iPhone all the time without issue. It's only my iPad that has this weird audio happening. Quicktime otherwise captures video and audio just fine; it just plays these two strange low-pitched beeps about once a minute. It's obviously computer-generated and not the sound one would get from a poor connection, etc.

Thanks for getting back with us, kismetcapitan. Just to clarify, these beeps are not present ever when recording (with or without) Quick Time Player on your Mac and iPhone, right?

If so, that does narrow it down to your iPad. Try testing without any bluetooth devices connected, after a fresh restart, on a solid Wi-Fi connection and on the most current iPadOS version. You may also wish to close any related and unneeded apps running on your iPad at the time.

Please let us know the results of that testing and we can continue investigating. Take care.

Yes, this only occurs when trying to record iPad using quicktime. I restarted my iPad, turned off bluetooth, and do not have any apps running. I also just tried enabling the iPad through Audio MIDI setup; no change. When I change the audio source in Quicktime, the sound isn't present, so apparently the tones are being generated by the iPad itself.

We appreciate those responses, kismetcapitan. If you record a video using the iPad without Quick Time being involved at all, then playback the video, do you hear these sounds? Also, does it make a difference if you turn Wi-Fi off or on while recording? How about if you are in a different environment (outside vs inside, for example)?

We'll be waiting to hear back.

Recording on the iPad using Screen Recorder runs normally, without being interrupted by these strange beeps. Turning off wifi has no effect. The beeps come in pairs, about every 60 seconds or so, and are deep in tone and very computer synthesized. Other than these beeps being added, the video and audio is captures by Quicktime's movie recorder perfectly.

I ran into the same issue – also with my new iPad Pro 2021 – connected by USB-C to my MacBook Pro M1. I'm a teacher and have been using my old iPad Pro 2016 to record about a hundred of hours of lessons during the spring semester through QuickTime Capture and never had this issue, so I tried the old unit which worked flawlessly. Both are running iPadOS 14.7.1 and the computer is on Big Sur 11.5.2.

Did you contact Apple Support, and did you get any response?

I'm having the same issue while recording from my 2021 M1 iPad Pro using Quicktime on my 2020 Intel Macbook Pro. I've come across several threads referencing the same issue, all using the new M1 iPads. I did not have this issue with the 2018 iPad Pro I was using previously, or with my 2020 iPhone. Many of the people complaining were trying to use their M1 iPad to share a screen in Zoom meetings, and in those threads they were getting brushed off as a Zoom problem. But it is not a Zoom problem.

Please let us know what you find out from Apple Support.

For relevant folks who come across this thread: It is easily reproducible. Attach M1 iPad via cable to a Mac (I've reproduced on 2021 MBP, 2013 MBA, 2014 Mini), bring up Quicktime and select New Movie Recording. Set both Camera and Microphone to the iPad, and turn the volume on the record window all the way up (it is at zero sound level by default). It's not necessary to even start the recording, the periodic buzzing will be heard.

I just wanted to chime in as well. There seems to be an issue with the new iPad Pro M1 and QuickTime I think. I live stream frequently but have had to use an older iPad Pro 2018 because my newer M1 iPad Pro gets a weird beeping noise whenever I use the "New Movie Recording" function. Everything is fine when using my older iPad Pro but the issue exists with the newer iPad Pro M1. Not sure if this helps to narrow things down.

UPDATE: I spent two hours on the phone with Apple support and got bounced around to several departments. Nobody had a clue. They all got to hear the sound however - this is clearly an intentional tone added for whatever reason, because otherwise the video and audio gets mirrored perfectly.

Has anyone tried this on MacOS Monterey? I'm wondering if this new update fixes this very annoying problem.

Nov 5, 2021 1:52 PM in response to kismetcapitan

I actually updated my iMac Pro to MacOS Monterey and it's still there. Another bit of information which I think will help to pinpoint where the problem is.…

Here are the tests I've done on my end.

iMac Pro = MacOS Monterey

iPad OS = iPad OS 15.1

I ran a test thinking it was QuickTime – I both recorded and live streamed and heard that weird beeping noise (both in my video recording and also my live stream). At this point I was thinking maybe it's QuickTime causing the issue but now I don't believe it is. I have another recording software called "ScreenFlow" and ScreenFlow was picking up that weird beeping noise as well.

When I use my older iPad Pro from 2018 none of the above happens. This tells me that it's not MacOS, it's not iPadOS, it's not QuickTime and has to be something with the newer iPad Pro using the M1 chip. There is no other explanation that I can think of.

Perhaps there is a setting on the newer iPad Pro which is causing the issue?
