I’ve purchased a 21” iMac because the Apple Genius was adamant it could also be used as a second monitor for my work laptop (HP on Windows 10). Now that it’s arrived, I can only find info saying it can’t be done. Can anyone help?
The Genius was incorrect. You can not use any new iMac as a display in Target Display Mode.
To be more precise, no iMac after 2014 supports Target Display Mode.

As was mentioned no it will not work. If you need an external display for your PC please buy one. If you want to return the iMac you can within 14 days for any reason.
First of all there is no such thing as a 21” iMac and never has been. The current iMac is 24” only. Secondly there is no way to use ANY Mac as a second display on a Windows PC, ever. And I seriously doubt an Apple Genius said any such thing. They know better.
It cannot be done. iMac is a computer, not a display for other devices.

Thanks for your post doubting everything I’d mentioned, not sure if you intended anything to be helpful… As per original post, they were adamant it could be done. Seems I’ll have to return the item as per rkaufmann87’s constructive comment.
