Hello there, stutelf!
Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like your trackpad is not working properly on your MacBook Pro. You've done excellent steps resetting the SMC and NVRAM so far. Next, we recommend taking a look at this article with steps to follow for How to use safe mode on your Mac. This will perform checks and stop certain software from starting up automatically. Once you are in safe mode, test to see if you have the same issue.
We also suggest following these steps to Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and create a test user to see if the issue is user specific or system wide.
Do you have this issue with an external mouse plugged into the MacBook Pro?
Let us know the results and have a terrific day!

Thanks for the reply Jen.
I can type and move cursor with a usb keyboard and mouse, but the problem persists in safe mode and when I add a new user.
This keyboard doesn’t have a cmd key though. Any idea how I can proceed please?
Thanks for the update, stutelf!
Since the issue is not happening with the external devices connected and is still happening after trying in safe mode and with a test user, we would recommend reaching out to Apple directly by checking out this link to Get Support and they will be more than happy to proceed with additional steps.
Cheers!

Just to note that "cmd" is an abbreviation for "command"
