storing clips outside library

I want to leave the video clips in place. I dont want to create a duplicate - In final cut it appears I have only two choices: either I have it imported into the library, or I choose a separate folder location (media location under storage settings). But I am looking for a third option. leave the clips where they are instead of making a copy of the video clips. Option 1 just creates a big file with duplicate video clips and option 2 does the same thing but stories it in the library. I want to leave the video clips where they are so I dont create extra space on the drivve.

You also have the import option to Leave in Place.

You cannot leave in place if the file is on a camera, in a camera card structure, or in a camera archive.

thank you. I thought this option was under "storage locations" not under the import window. That was set to "copy to library" so I changed it to leave in place. Of course, this doesn't undo my current projects that have the clips inside the library. Apparently there is no way to revert a project back to "leave in place" once you have imported them....

No, you can only consolidate so that the clips are outside the library bundle to a storage location. Just to note, if the library and the external files are on the same volume, and the files are copied into the library, there is no real duplication of media as the system uses hard links so only a single actual copy of the file exists on the drive.
