My watch will show ten unread messages/notifications.
On my iPhone 12, none. When I go to look at what those ten are - they are commercial texts, like from a store.
even if I delete them on my phone, they are unread on the watch.
all regular text messages sync properly.
series 6 now
series 3 in the past had the same issue
any help would be appreciated

It sounds as though some SMS messages aren’t being marked as read on your Apple Watch after reading them on your iPhone. Apple Support Communities is a great place for help! You mentioned deleting messages on your iPhone, and they remain on your Apple Watch as unread. Deleting from your iPhone may not delete the messages from your Apple Watch which would be why the unread notification is remaining. Are you able to read the messages on your Apple Watch, and notice if the notification disappears?
If they disappear after reading the messages, and the issue is with the devices not mirroring each other. We would recommend confirming that you’ve performed the latest updates which were recently released.
