how to use an external monitor with the macbook air closed and not plugged in

How can I use an external monitor with my MacbookAir closed without keeping it plugged in? I don't want to mess up the battery life.

You can't. To use "clamshell" mode the computer must be plugged in.

This will not harm your computer or your battery.
