This problem happens on macOS Big Sur 11.6 & Apple Silicon M1 Mac, doesn't happens on Intel Mac.
If "DVD Player" open automatically when you insert a DVD, it still doesn't works. Please choose the window, type ⌘+Q, and re-open "DVD Player" from "Dock".
I can't check replies from now on. Sorry.
Where are people downloading VLC player?
From the developer’s website, videoLAN.org.
Download from here:
Could be some configuration however my wife's new MBA M1 has the same issue. CD's are OK. When we try to play a DVD the Apple player opens and then nothing loads. Has been auto starting. Hitting the play icon does nothing. Not sure what apps or configuration we would have to cause this issue. Both worked fine with previous 11.5.2. It is interesting that after I went and downloaded 3 other Mac player apps I had no issues with any of them. I have the same apps that I have had for the last 8 years and never had an issue.
I also have DVD player 6.0. I tried different connections and no go. Like I said this has worked perfectly for the last 8 years with Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur prior to 11.6. Also tried on MBA M1 and same issue. I have changed nothing in other hardware or apps.
Hey. I don't understand your last paragraph. I don't know what Region 1 and 2 refers to or VLC.
I have a documentary from the 80's on an external drive I got on amazon in 2014. It worked fine until the update. Thanks
Thank you so much. My player doesn't have that info on it but
I was able to download the software and started watching the video.
I wish technical support could have explained this to me.
I asked on the phone but they declined.
Now, thanks to you, I don't have to buy a new dvd player.
As I spent more time with this app, I found it to be a little challenging regarding the pause function. It was harder to see the controls too, so I wound up watching the video on my old computer which can't produce sound due to an external speaker which broke inside the headphone jack, but when connected to a bluetooth speaker, sounds fine. Apple really should fix the problem which they created!
I was fine until step 6. I tired typing the letter l the letter i as well as the number 1. None of them worked.
I appreciate your help though, and hope someone else can get us through that step
Thank you.
its the "get info" command, easier to right click and select "get info" from the sub-menu, then continue with the sets listed above
don't understand why Apple hides DVD Player in a core services directory, I made a short-cut and put it in the normal Applications menu. This may be a hold over from the old ways when DVD Player ONLY worked with internal Apple branded DVD drives
Thanks for this, it fixed the problem for me. Interestingly (to me, anyway!), I first spotted the problem in Handbrake when I tried to rip a DVD to my iPad. Fixing the issue for DVD Player also fixed it for Handbrake. This suggests to me that the problem lies in a macOS routine rather than DVD Player itself.
I've just updated my 2021 Macbook Air M1 to 11.6 and found my SuperDrive will no longer play DVDs. I see the disc appear on the screen and the DVD Player is engaged. The Viewer screen comes up, but I can't get the disc to play. I can use the Controls at the top menu to eject the disc, but that is all. I also hear the disc being engaged inside the SuperDrive.
What should I do ?
hello. could you tell me which app this is exactly? If I type in VLC media player, I get many choices. Do you know the developer's name? I would really appreciate it, because I just got a new mac and the superdrive with it a few months ago and now I can't watch DVDs!
whoops, i just saw the link above.. sorry.
Thank you for responding. This is the first time I have used this discussion format for a problem. I wonder how many users it will take for Apple to fix the problem.
Have you received similar comments as mine to your inquiry to this issue?
I would appreciate any comments from other users experiencing this new problem
Was told at Apple store the Mac Mini will work with our Apple Super Drive because it does NOT have the M1. chip. This is just info for readers of this issue
Foxtrot-Sierra - you are a beautiful human being! this actually worked. even the "Geniuses" at the Apple Store couldn't figure this out, unless of course you are an Apple Genius, in which case, where have you been all my life? Thank You!!
Have any of the people who've upgraded to Monterey encountered any additional problems? I was too quick to update the last time, and feel better waiting to find out if there are issues that may be fixed at a later time.
