I was fine until step 6. I tired typing the letter l the letter i as well as the number 1. None of them worked.
I appreciate your help though, and hope someone else can get us through that step
Thank you.
its the "get info" command, easier to right click and select "get info" from the sub-menu, then continue with the sets listed above
don't understand why Apple hides DVD Player in a core services directory, I made a short-cut and put it in the normal Applications menu. This may be a hold over from the old ways when DVD Player ONLY worked with internal Apple branded DVD drives
Went to the Apple store today. The technician said I'm the first person to come in with this issue.
I had to point out this thread of others with the same problem. DVDs & CDs not playing after the upgrade to 11.6
He was unable to correct the issue and said we need to wait for Apple to come out with a new update and hopefully they will correct the issue then. In the meantime the only way to get discs to play was to download the VLC app and press a lot of open DVD and play DVD buttons and then wait a long minute for the screen to open and for the movie/disc to play.
Briefly scanning all these replies. I have to say I'm somewhat happy I have the same problem. I got my wife an M1 MBA to watch videos on. She does not used computers at all so I removed all extraneous apps from the dock that she would never use including Safari, Contacts, Mail etc. This little MBA is about as clean as you get. Worked great when it arrived about a month or so ago with 11.5 on it. Today I upgraded it to 11.6 and no more videos, baby....Nothing, zip, and, nova. She smiled sweetly and said, I have a nice book to read. Yeah, baby VLC, getting installed right now. Apple, you are your own worst enemy but at least you're not as horrible as Facebook.
APPLE INSTALLED 'UPGRADE" ON MY Big Sur 116. AND NOW IT WONT PLAY MY DVDS THAT WERE WORKING PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT BEFORE. I WAS TO UNDO THE UPGRADE PLEASE. I am not the only person with this problem.........
Thanks for this, it fixed the problem for me. Interestingly (to me, anyway!), I first spotted the problem in Handbrake when I tried to rip a DVD to my iPad. Fixing the issue for DVD Player also fixed it for Handbrake. This suggests to me that the problem lies in a macOS routine rather than DVD Player itself.
I've just updated my 2021 Macbook Air M1 to 11.6 and found my SuperDrive will no longer play DVDs. I see the disc appear on the screen and the DVD Player is engaged. The Viewer screen comes up, but I can't get the disc to play. I can use the Controls at the top menu to eject the disc, but that is all. I also hear the disc being engaged inside the SuperDrive.
What should I do ?
See what foxtrot sierra said earlier. It worked for me. Once you have it configured, create the icon and drag the dvd into it. I don't think you need to download any software. I had tried that previously, and wasn't happy with the results., so I deleted the VLC app and followed the steps they outlined. This solved the problem for me. Good luck
Install VLC. It's free. Set DVD prefs to open VLC when you insert a disk. Click on the disk icon and drag the Video TS folder to the VLC app where it says "drag media here" or something like that. If there is also an audio TS folder, you can ignore it. It will play and there will be sound.

Please try to the following procedure.
1. If "DVD Player" is running, choose the window, and type ⌘+Q
2. On Finder, type Shift+⌘+G
3. Type "/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/"
4. "Go"
5. Choose "DVD Player"
6. Type ⌘+I
7. Check "Open using Rosetta"
8. Type ⌘+W
9. Add "DVD Player" to "Dock" by drag-and-drop
10. Open "DVD Player"
11. Insert a DVD in a disc drive, and play a DVD
This problem happens on macOS Big Sur 11.6 & Apple Silicon M1 Mac, doesn't happens on Intel Mac.
If "DVD Player" open automatically when you insert a DVD, it still doesn't works. Please choose the window, type ⌘+Q, and re-open "DVD Player" from "Dock".
I can't check replies from now on. Sorry.
Intel 2021 MBP, 11.6, pulled out little-used superdrive (little used because I replaced the Mac that needed it), plugged it in with USB-C to USB adapter, and DVD player opened automatically, and then....blank gray window with controls at the bottom, then sound of preview; when I clicked menu or FF buttons on controller within that window, got 'Not Permitted' to show on the gray background. So I can hear a movie, but not see video.
Quitting the auto-opened DVD player and opening it from Finder, I get a flash of video as the window opens, then back to gray. Any resizing of the viewer window brings up a flash of the opening/menu sequence, but then gray covers the window again.
I tried the suggested sequence here, but 'open in Rosetta' is not an option in the information window for DVD Player. And others suggest that it is not supposed to happen with Intel macs, but this is an Intel MBP.
I think I figured it out: I had set sidecar up earlier in the day to use my iPad for a video presentation while working on another Project, and when I killed sidecar and Bluetooth, and did an SMC reset, I could now watch DVDs with the new but not M1 MBP.
My MacBookAir bought Feb 2021 with M1. chip played dvds until Sept when it would not. To clarify, when I plugged the Apple USB Superdrive into the Mac, the DVD window appeared on the screen AND the name of the dvd title appeared on the right side of the screen as an icon. So, the computer recognized everything. correctly but would not play. To restate, after long sessions on the phone with Apple care and subsequent visits to the Apple store Genius Bar and software re-installs I was told that I can’t play
dvds on my 8 month old MacAir. Even though i have done so all these months. I am no tech person but seems to me that the problem began with some update
If you read through this discussion you will see that the issue is with the 11.6 update on M1 Macs.. Many times the Apple tech is not up to speed on the latest issues. The easiest method is to download the free app VLC and use that.:

Perhaps Monterey will fix the issue tomorrow (who knows).
hello. could you tell me which app this is exactly? If I type in VLC media player, I get many choices. Do you know the developer's name? I would really appreciate it, because I just got a new mac and the superdrive with it a few months ago and now I can't watch DVDs!
whoops, i just saw the link above.. sorry.
Thank you for responding. This is the first time I have used this discussion format for a problem. I wonder how many users it will take for Apple to fix the problem.
Have you received similar comments as mine to your inquiry to this issue?
I would appreciate any comments from other users experiencing this new problem
Was told at Apple store the Mac Mini will work with our Apple Super Drive because it does NOT have the M1. chip. This is just info for readers of this issue
