Opening context menu crashes any app. Contextual Menu Items folder missing.

Hi all,

Specs:

13" Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013)

Big Sur 11.5.2

2.4 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

4GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Intel Iris 1536 MB

This computer has run smoothly up until now. Opening the context menu on any item, in any way (right click on mousepad, right click on wireless mouse, command click, etc.) will immediately crash the app. This happens in almost every app (Safari, Spotify, etc.) and on the system itself (finder, images on the desktop, etc.) except for some reason Steam. Steam is working perfectly fine.

The report log says something about BUS 10 and kern_memory_error. (If you need to see the report log, please let me know which parts to post).

Diagnostics came back clean. This happens in any new account we create, whether it's standard or admin. It occurred in safe boot.

I saw some advice that said to remove anything in the Contextual Menu Items folder but the weird thing is, that folder is missing.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello amigodiego,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

We understand that almost every app your macOS Big Sur system has begun crashing when you try to open the app. You have already done some good troubleshooting without success. At this point, because it is happening on almost all of the apps, clean diagnostics, new accounts and in safe mode, the next thing would be to get a current back up of your system and then reinstall the macOS on your computer. You can use the following article as guides if you need a reminder. As long as you DO NOT select to erase the drive before installation, it should reinstall the macOS without harming your data. But that is why a backup is recommended, just in case.

Back up your Mac - Apple Support

Reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards.
