applications not responding after shutdown / restart

After every shutdown / restart, all applications fail to open when clicked on. This includes mail, safari, photos etc and I get the message "application not responding". After "force quit" they eventually open. Problem is even worse with pages, numbers, word & excel where it takes ages to get the app & then the selected doc to open. Very frustrating. Am running macOS Big Sur 11.5.2. Can anyone help please?

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

If the above fails to fix the problem then definitely run Etrecheck per P. Phillips' recommendation.

Without scanning all the details for Software issue - it appears the Rotational / Mechanical HD 5400 RPM is failing.

With that being the Start point of the whole issue - Get a Recent Time Machine Backup done ASAP

Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider nearest your location. Just input the Country and City Info and have it evaluated and or repair ASSP.

Failing hard drive - This computer has a hard drive that appears to be failing.

Time Machine backup out-of-date - The last Time Machine backup is over 10 days old.

Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck  directly from a Well Respected ASC Contributor. The application is free or paid from added features. Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ). It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software. The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.
