"The Apple TV update couldn't be downloaded at this time" persistent error message

After a few months of inactivity, turned on Apple TV, but no longer connects to wifi... Apple TV recognizes wifi network (has a wifi address but no other network info). On selection of wifi network, immediately gives "There was a problem connecting to the network. The wifi password you entered is incorrect. Try again (-100)" with no chance to affirm or change password. Tried updating Apple TV software but got above error msg, have restarted cable modem, wifi router, Apple TV multiple times...

An internet connection is essential for signing in, and for getting updates. You will have to get the connection working first. If your Apple TV can't connect to Wi-Fi - Apple Support


If the IP address is 169.254.x.x, then the Apple TV was unable to get an IP address from the DHCP functionality of the router, and made one up as coping mechanism. 169.254.x.x is not connectable though. Then the issue is in the home network, not the Apple TV device.
