M1 MacBook Air: external monitor not recognized when lid is closed

I have a M1 MacBook Air. When connected to an external monitor, Dell - S2721NX 27" IPS LED FHD, the Mac will not display an image when the lid is closed. It occurs when the Mac has been connected to the monitor and then, placed in step mode, even for a short time. In addition, my bluetooth Apple keyboard will not bring the Mac out of sleep mode - I have to open the lid of the Mac, wait for the screen to turn on, then close the lid again. I have seen many similar issues but have not seen a resolution anywhere. The Apple Engineers are due to call me tomorrow, but I am not confident at present.

Yes, it is connected to external power, not on battery. I have no idea what to do now - even Apple doesn't seem to be able to help. At present, I have spent over $1200 and cannot use it in the way I should be able to.

Is your Macbook connected to power? because if not, then it will not work, it only works in dock mode when it is connected to the power cable :)

What kind of dock or dongle are you using for the external monitor? It seems that some don’t work so well with the m1 chip.. hope you already had a call and it has been solved..

It seems that some monitors are compatible and others are not. I ended up trading the MacBook Air in for an iMac, which I am very happy with.

I have a MBA M1 and works fine with a TB display and my LG Ultrafine 5K monitor and I'm running 11.5.2. Not sure if 11.6 would make any difference. What version of the OS are you using?
