iOS 15 Messages Notifications Not Working

After updating to iOS 15, I have noticed that SMS/iMessage notifications from the Messages app no longer trigger audible (text tones), visual (LED flash) or haptic (vibration) feedback on my phone. The notification tile still appears in my notification center on the lock screen as well as banners when my phone is unlocked. I also notice that if I am actively using my phone, the audio notification and haptics trigger but they do not do this when the phone is locked.

I have confirmed that I am not in any type of focus mode (Do Not Disturb) and I have also attempted to toggle my notification settings on and off for Messages with no success.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Update. I went into the apple watch settings on the phone. Notifications/Messages. I had selected Custom Notifications in the past which had worked. Changed it back to "Mirror my iPhone." The notifications are now working correctly (for the time being anyway... we'll see)

Yes, I did.

I thought that if I started fresh with all of my devices, the problem would go away. And it did. Forewarning, this was a major pain to do, but it worked. All of my notifications are now working exactly as they should. It's been two weeks since I did this, and it's still working.

(Keep in mind, I probably did some overkill here, but this is exactly what I did.)

  • Signed out of my iCloud account on both of my Macs.
  • Unpaired my watch from my iPhone.
  • Reset my iPhone and set it up as a brand new iPhone (Erase All Content and Settings).
  • Reset my iPad and set it up as a brand new iPad (Erase All Content and Settings).
  • Before I re-activated my iPhone and iPad, I signed into my iCloud account in a web browsernd removed every device from my Device List: my Macs, iPhone, iPad, Watch, etc. (So, I now had NO devices in my Device List.)
  • Then I activated my iPhone and set it up as a brand new phone. Wiped clean. I did NOT migrate anything from my iCloud backups. I treated it as a brand new phone.
  • I did the same with my other devices.

Like I said... overkill... but it worked.

Trying Again:

  • On my Mac, I have Messages set to Allow Notifications.
  • Alerts selected for Messages alert style.
  • Show notifications on lock screen, Show in Notification Center, Badge app icon, and Play sound for notifications checked.
  • Show previews set to always (default) and Notification grouping to automatic.

  • On my iPhone Messages is set to Allow Notifications.
  • Alerts turned on for Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners.
  • Banner Style is set to Persistent,
  • Sounds is set to Note.
  • Badges is turned on
  • Show in Car Play is turned off
  • LOCK SCREEN APPEARANCE is set to Show Previews When Unlocked and Notification Grouping is set to Automatic
  • Customize Notifications is set to Repeat Alerts Once

I left the Messages Sound on the iPhone on Note (the Default) and went through my contacts and set a different alert sound for each of them. When I tried to change Note on the phone, I got nothing.

I get alert sounds from Messages now and also get the little alert box at the top right of my Mac

I still can’t get the alert box for notifications that ask for a code, like Amazon or PayPal, but the badge appears on the Messages icon

I deleted every Focus except Do Not Disturb and Driving

In Do Not Disturb, I added my family members to People in ALLOWED NOTIFICATIONS and I added the Calendar and Time Sensitive Notifications to the Allowed Apps.

Focus Status is Disabled, nothing turned on for Home Screen or Lock Screen, Smart Activation is Off

I have an automatic turn on and off time for Do Not Disturb

The reset procedure I described above did return the iPhone 13 Pro to factory settings, but it did not delete apps or wipe out Notes, Contacts, Calendar, etc. As I said above, this procedure restored the audio ping for incoming text messages but, as soon as I turned on Text Message Forwarding, so I could also receive text messages on my iMac, this killed the audio ping on my iPhone.

Completely wiping the iPhone and reinstalling the iOS also restored the audio ping. But when I restored the phone from backup, the audio ping was gone again. Resetting the iPhone at that point, as described above, once again restored the text message ping, but it died again as soon as I turned on Text Message Forwarding. Strangely, turning Text Message Forwarding back off did NOT restore the text message ping.

@REPG

Do you have an Apple Watch? If so, let Apple Support know if you contact them again. I had the same issue, and found that the Watch seemed to be interfering with message notifications on the phone. iOS thought that the Watch was handling notifications, and so didn't display them when the phone was locked. Problem went away (for me) after the last iOS update.

I'm new to this thread, but not new to the problem. My iPhone Xr and Apple Watch are plagued by the same issue (no notifications on incoming messages).

Both iMessages (blue) and SMS (text) are impacted.

I've tried many/most of the suggestions posted on this thread (and elsewhere), to no avail.

The bug is random - occasionally I'll get a notification on the watch, but not very often.

I found a workaround, of sorts. I've added the watchOS Messages app as a 'complication' on the face of the watch. Whenever a new message arrives, the complication immediately displays X UNREAD, so I can see that new messages are waiting to be viewed by glancing at the watch. Better than no notification at all.

Another observation that I've not seen reported on this thread - I found that if I disable Bluetooth on the iPhone, the notifications are restored on the phone. Even if it is sleeping/locked, an incoming message will trigger the expected visual/audible/haptic notification on the phone. I surmise that the firmware on the phone is suppressing notifications on the phone thinking that the watch is going to provide the notification. That's by design. But with BT turned off, the phone decides that it needs to issue the notification. That's purely conjecture. Needless to say, leaving BT turned off on the phone is not an acceptable solution.

I also have a senior advisor working on the case. She has contacted Engineering about the bug. There's no evidence that the Engineering people she contacts are in touch with those reported by @christiansaint in the previous post.

You could try temporarily turning off the other devices (or put them to sleep). Then see if notifications appear on the phone. That experiment would indicate if the presence of the other devices is impacting notifications on your phone.

A few weeks ago, I found that turning off Bluetooth on my phone restored phone notifications. That wasn't a solution, but led me to the conclusion that the iOS 15.3 phone wasn't doing notifications if the watch was 'visible'. You could try that experiment too, while waiting for the replacement iP13 to arrive.

I now have four days of experience since updating iPhone XR to 15.4. Notification of incoming messages (both blue and green) seems to working OK. If Watch is sitting on its charger, they get delivered to the (dark) locked screen of iPhone with banner, beep and haptic buzz. If Watch is on my wrist, they get delivered to the Watch instead (unless the phone is unlocked, in which case they appear on the phone and not the watch). However, there still is a bug. The notification on the phone occurs twice, about a minute apart, even though the Repeat Alerts parameter is set to "Once" (in Settings/Notifications/Messages/Customize Notifications). Better than that not at all.

@WestfordJoe Any chance you have another Apple device logged into the same iCloud account, and 'close' to the iPhone?? You indicated you have no iWatch. What about a Mac? Occasionally, I think I've noticed that message notification arrives on my MacBook, and not on the locked iPhone. Seems random - can't reproduce that behavior. I wonder if Apple's complex notification software might be inhibiting notification on your phone if it thinks you've been notified via a Mac.

But in other news, 15.4 seems to have broken notification from some other apps. One of my apps that used to issue a notification every morning at 9am has stopped doing so since I updated to 15.4. Troubleshooting of that is ongoing...

I have been involved this week and last in a long sequence of attempted workarounds with Apple Support. All failed.

I just took a callback from someone at Apple Support who said she had discussed the problem with a senior manager. The manager had told her that the lack of sound, flash and haptic alerts for some users' SMS/Text Messages was a known issue and that iOS engineers were "working on a fix for release and update as soon as possible".

We'll see.
