Mac Mini M1 with BenQ 4k Monitors FLICKER
Running a brand new Mac Mini M1 (arrived on September 18, 2021) with 2 brand new BenQ 28" 4k monitors. One connected via 4k/60 HDMI. One connected via USB C/Display Port cable certified for 8k. Both monitors experience intermittent flicker.
My partner contacted BenQ who immediately blamed the cables. BenQ has published a statement that some of their 4k monitors need a firmware update to work correctly with the M1 Mac Mini.
Robert at BenQ was insistent that it is a cable issue and that they have never heard or seen of an a flicker issue with this monitor and an M1 Mac.
It's not the cables. We verified connections, resolution, etc. Issue continues intermittently. We found lots of posts online about it and also some youtube videos with the exact same setup we have and (surprise) intermittent flickering.
We called BenQ back and they deny any issue with the monitor. Robert continued to insist there is no issue with their monitor and refused to look at links at youtube or other online posts with the same issue. He claimed that he was actually "Business Class" support and that our monitor was a gaming monitor and support should be handled by their customer service call center.
He then went on to say that the monitor is meant for gaming and would experience issues if used for email, web browsing, XL spreadsheets, etc. He claimed that because the monitor was designed for high performance 1ms response time gaming, that it would not function correctly in normal, every day use. Isn other words, "It's a Ferrari and you can't drive it to the grocery store you can only drive it on a race track." I asked for someone in Tier II and he claimed that they have no escalation path. I then asked who writes updates to their drivers and firmware and he disconnected our call.
It looks like we will return both BenQ monitors and stick with Samsung which are operating correctly.
If Apple knows anything about resolving the issue, it would be great to hear. The Mac Mini M1 is registered to my partner so I had to choose the Air instead but this is in relation to the M1 Mini.
