IPad on iPad OS 15: Messages not syncing or sending SMS (iMessages work)

For years, my iPad, Mac and iPhone seamlessly sync all messages sent and received via iMessage or SMS (blue and green bubbles). One of my favourite features of the Apple ecosystem.

Just updated my iPhone 11 Pro and iPad Pro to OS 15 today. I now noticed that the iPad didn’t show messages from any SMS (green bubble) and can’t send to an SMS destination - this was never a problem before.

I’ve rebooted to no avail. No changes to the settings, but I have confirmed messages is enabled in the iCloud settings on the iPad and the Messages settings look identical to the iPhone settings (with the same send/receive addresses).

If you have an iPhone - and both iPad and iPhone are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID, to send SMS/MMS messages from your iPad you must explicitly enable Text Message Forwarding for your iPad on your iPhone...

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding - set to ON - and explicitly enable your iPad from the list of devices.

Also ensure that Messages in iCloud is enabled on both your iPhone and iPad:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Messages - set to ON

As of last week I have a new Apple Senior Tech trying to help resolve the issue IM having, still having. The advisor took a series of data for the engineers and emailed me this morning letting me know he has heard back from the engineers and wanted to set a call up to troubleshoot. SO once I get that call, hopefully today, ill report back here with some hopeful troubleshooting news

I do not have an update on a solution as of yet. When I spoke to the tech advisor a few days ago, he just gathered more information and emailed yesterday to set up another call to gather even more information. IM hoping today I will get a call from the advisor. I will post back as soon as I get any type of resolution. THANK YOU for contacting apple about this. Hopefully they can get a fix.

I know this is probably dated, but...

Same here. When I’m home with my iPhone XSMax iOS 15.0.2 (with super old MacBook late ‘09 running macOS 10.13.6 and 2 older iPad mini’s, i really only use one a mini 2 retina at iOS 12.5.5) they sync fine..i can send and receive both types of messages. But if i leave and come back i have all of the notifications. I had 100+ message notifications (both types) after being gone 15 hours from home. Everything is checked and on except for calls on my iPad or MacBook when my iPhone is near. As all of my devices show in my iCloud under my Apple ID, i know, and already knew, they are under the same account with messages ticked on on every device. I sent an iMessage and a regular text (green and blue) as a test this AM from the iPad in question and my iPhone showed them immediately. I bet when i get home tonight, I’ll have a ton of notifications on my iPad again...it’s just strange to me...as the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ Do y’all think this is yet another way to phase out old devices?? I almost fell out of my chair when this iPad mini had an update to 12.5. LOL

Yep and I still have not heard from the Senior Advisor Ive been working with on this. I actually emailed him earlier as I havent heard from him in 2 weeks. IM baffled at why Apple's Engineers havent found a solution to this yet. Its been months now and an update should of happened to correct it months ago. regardless, as soon as I get some answers, I will be responding here. Please, if anyone is having these issues, please call apple, request to speak to a senior advisor and make the report!

I have the same issue as everyone. I’ve talked to Apple support and a ticket was created for the engineers. Their suggestion was to delete my backup from the cloud and start over. No to that solution. I’ve tried everything else and my iPhone 11 and iPad Pro 2020 don’t synch iMessages or SMS. What a pain to have to manually read and delete messages from both devices. Come on Apple you can do better than that.

Hello!

Here is the latest update. I spoke with my Senior Advisor today and there is no update on troubleshooting. There is some good news, as more reports have come in about the same problem and now the Engineer team is working to hopefully have a resolution. If you havent called into Apple yet, please do, so they can document and collect logs to help find a resolution. For me, this all started after the 1st major update to IOS.
