Can no longer keep favourites side bar expanded in Safari 15

I recently updated my iMac to Safari 15. Up to this update I was able to keep my Favourites in the SideBar extended permanently to show all my favourites. With this update I now have to click Bookmarks in the side bar or under View select Show Favourites Bar, but it does not "hold" permanently.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Apple Support just figured this out for me. In Preferences -> General, "Safari opens with:" was set to "A New Window". We changed it to "All windows from last session". Now if I close Safari and re-open it, the sidebar comes back just the way I left it. I don't know if it matters but "New windows open with:" is set to "Same Page".

I think you have big sur and the people (including me) who have this issue have catalina. Because there are 2 versions of safari 15. Catalina doesn't have the new tabs, it also has different preferences.

I just tried to change it from "All windows from last session" to "All non-private windows from last session". It doesn't change. It doesn't remember the expanded favourites. I don't have "A new Window" at all. There is also nothing useful in "New windows open with:"

I think you are spot on with your thoughts on this. I have an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) which can longer access any new OSX. In my discussions with one very helpful member of the Apple Support team she described my iMac as "Vintage" and, in retrospect, I feel she herself suspected the issue might be hardware related. She proposed a two-stage approach. The first was to go into Safe Mode. This replicated the issues exactly. The second was to take the iMac into an Apple Shop. I thought taking a large unit such as this into my local Apple Shop for a relatively minor issue was a step too far! I think you are right in suspecting the software upgrade had not been fully tested against an older machine. It would be interesting to see if anyone with a newer model has experienced the same issue.

No. Safari up until the last 14.x version always opened the Sidebar at start-up with **unfolded** items, as that makes perfect sense. Then one upgrades to Safari v15 and it's messed up.

I call this a bug. No more. No less.

Another example of "quick quick", hardly any in-house testing, let our customers be our testers as that is far cheaper. This disease is affecting almost every software-development nowadays. Managers strong-arming developers into rushing releases to market.

Fix this bug Apple. And give your developers time to breathe and people in-house to test. This strategy with murderous deadlines is not working very well.

I have submitted feedback, I am very disappointed about the changes in Safari 15. I was considering to switch to Chrome on all my devices but I have decided to give Apple a chance to fix it. Meanwhile I stay with iOS/iPadOS 14 and I have downgraded Safari to version 14 on MacOS Bigsur. It took me 2 hours to do it but it was definitely worth to do, Safari 15 UI is a crap and needs to be fixed.
