Can no longer keep favourites side bar expanded in Safari 15

I recently updated my iMac to Safari 15. Up to this update I was able to keep my Favourites in the SideBar extended permanently to show all my favourites. With this update I now have to click Bookmarks in the side bar or under View select Show Favourites Bar, but it does not "hold" permanently.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Apple Support just figured this out for me. In Preferences -> General, "Safari opens with:" was set to "A New Window". We changed it to "All windows from last session". Now if I close Safari and re-open it, the sidebar comes back just the way I left it. I don't know if it matters but "New windows open with:" is set to "Same Page".

Do you think this problem is hardware dependent? My wife has a 27" iMac w/ Intel 4690 proc, and Safari bookmarks work just fine, as it always had. I have a similar 27" iMac w/ 7600 proc and mine has the Safari bookmark problem as you described. Both machines running what is nominally the identical, latest versions of Big Sur and Safari.

I might add that since day 1, my iMac has been a royal PITA (for 4 years now). Problems (especially with Safari) come and go, depending on the version of the software. This proc (core i5 7600) was a mild step up from the base Core i5 model, and my theory is that Apple has done little, or perhaps *no*, software testing on this model with their software updates, as there were relatively few iMacs sold with this configuration.

Just a thought.

I think the idea here is that Apple and other tech developers can't sell new products if they work perfect, if you think about it our iPhones are more powerful then desktop Macs we used in the past to edit heavy tasks like animals, videos etc; ..so my guess is Apple is starting over with safari from the ground up but features under the hood do not seem to benefit your interests but secure Apple`s.

if you think about it Safari is now officially primitive compared to most browsers, but this does not mean Apple would allow other browsers to perform better either....so find a way to make it work

The sidebar is not the only issue, here is the whole list so far:

-the side bar no longer allows you to browse fav bookmarks as mentioned here

-the bookmarks bar is now between the tabs and their pages which is even more confusing, but that's the idea

-maybe its me but I have not figured out how to open safari pages on my other devices via cloud any more

-While i can still see all the safari pages open per my devices in the Catalina version of safari I can't since ios15

I have this problem and having read the possible solutions and tried them and they do not work. So the simple fact must be that Apple have forgotton their original Apple pholisophy "make the computers work the way man works". By adding unwanted and unnecessary keystroke wastes time, creates frustration and is way outside the original philosophy of machines being servants.

It seems to me that apple are now modelling their systems on the Microsoft pattern - make man work the way machines want to work
