Safari 15 not opening websites - "a problem repeatedly occurred"

The automatic update to Safari 15 (Catalina) came across yesterday and now a huge number of websites no longer open. The problem seems to begin after attempting to login - the redirect confuses the browser. Does anyone know what's going on?

Switching to Opera and Brave until this gets fixed. See screenshot for typical error page below.....

Very nice of you LD - but just in the interest of security, is there a link to the standalone Safari 15 installer direct from Apple's support site? I haven't been able to find one.

On the linked file posted here - “Show Package Contents” option isn’t available - and drilling down in Terminal could be a project if there are multiple levels of nested packages! Not to say anything nefarious is in there but I'm just a couple extra levels of cautious these days. Please no offense.

This is Apple's own swCDN (software content distribution network) as seen from the link's domain name:

I have had the same problem ( but only for Financial Institutions websites, including insurance co.s - one outlier -Xfinity and AT&T) Originally like you I thought it was Safari 15.0 which I downloaded on 9/21/21. So I reinstalled Safari 14.1.2 from Time Machine Back-up and the same problem continued.

It's not Safari...it's the Security Update to MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 which I believe is causing the problem.

So I re-installed ( Restored) my previous MacOS operating system /Hard Drive ( not just HD Mackintosh - Data) but everything as at 9/19/21 - i.e previous to the updates. And now everything for me at least works perfectly. No issues

Someone else suggested upgrading to Big Sur but I was not that keen, so effectively I have down graded to 10.15.7 before the Security Update/Safari 15

To Repeat, I don't believe the bug is in Safari.... it's in the Security Update posted at the same time.

But am no expert on this. All I know is that by reinstalling a previous version of MacOS from my Time Machine Back up I solved my problem

Thanks TheLittles - I'm sure ABCDE might help some, but this is not happening on just my machine - according to many people across the web today, it's happening to many/most people since the security update was pushed.

A - No browser is, or ever has been a login item.

B - Never once installed any (mostly fake) security software.

C - see above - my policy is to never allow these kinds of shady softwares to be installed

D - running off of a clean install system only SSD - all user files are on external.

E - Yes, done

For laughs I'll try my blank spare Admin account in safe mode. It doesn't get any cleaner than that. But win or lose, it doesn't solve anything.

Thanks for the reference - I should have checked out the full URL!! Well done - it seems to have solved the issue. Maybe the security patch was installed on top of the new version of Safari and caused it to get tweaked...hard to say. Just glad it's resolved!

Good computing igirl1 !

This is why we are paid the big bucks 😉

Report the Solution:

Thanks for reporting it. Having been solved you may want to do your part in reporting the solution too. Being only Beta (still in the works), I’m certain Apple needs to be made aware of this. Reporting it will help many for certain.

As a 75 year old Apple Rookie I cannot tell you how much I valued this chain around the security update corrupting some of the web sites that I often use and the speed at which the professionals sourced the fix. My mac mini is 9 years old and other than an issue with a WD time capsule becoming unsupported with Catalina I have been a solid Apple customer. Thanks to all for identifying and bringing resources in to address this issue. This old guy greatly appreciates your work.

I believe this is more than a Safari 15.0 issue. I also updated safari when the latest security patch came out, Sept 28?

I have posted in the user community. at first I couldn't login at all. reinstalling the Safari 15.0 didn't really help. after all, it contains the same bugs. I have not seen an update yet. I can login to my bank, BUT I CANNOT GET A TEXT FOR 2 FACTOR AUTHENICATION !! I have to either get a phone call or an email. I think this is a bug in the security patch ???

I have the same problem if I try to login to my bank, using the CHROME browser, which is why I think it's a security patch bug !!

I seem to be able to browse and use most other web sites, with either browser. I have not seen anything helpful in the user community , as it needs a patch from Apple. I hope apple is monitoring theses discussions.

I will try to connect with apple support just to get my problem registered with the people responsible for fixing it.

Good luck to everyone.

To Wheel64:

This is an update to my original post and referencing your problems. Like you I suspected it was not just Safari 15. So.....

I reinstalled my Hard Drive -using the Restore feature - from my Time Machine Back-up of a few days before, i.e. before downloading the Security Patch and Safari 15.0 at the same time on Sept 21. which then caused all these problems.

The re-install took about 3 hrs. but it sorted everything out, and no issues. NOW the good part...

I decided to move step by step to update, to be current.

So I only allowed Apple to download and install the Security Patch, on its own. Once installed I checked everything was OK. And everything worked OK as before, but I am still using Safari 14.1.2

So, then and only then I downloaded and installed, ( as separate instruction) Safari 15.0 and nothing else. This item just took less than 5 mins. and my system didn't need to re-boot.

Again I tested everything and everything worked... no issues.... all websites opening their log-in pages.

My only thought is that installing the Security Patch and Safari 15.0 simultaneously caused the bug on my MacBook pro to prevent accessing -in my case - a whole host of financial institution log-in pages. However by downloading these 2 items separately allowed my system to update with no errors or issues.

Apple Support advised me to boot up in “safe mode”, reset NVRAM and reset SMC. None of these worked. Still unable to access Banking, eBay and numerous other sites. Definately a problem with Catalina 10.15.7 which I installed last week, but Apple Support is clearly unaware and has no clear solution. I’m not confident about reinstalling Catalina nor that this wouldn’t just repeat the problem. Apple need to address problem and issue an update.

Apple is getting very sloppy with updates it seem. Most of my bookmarked websites for bill paying are not working since the update. BUT ... they still work on my iPad. So if a website doesn't work I have to go to IOS to pay a bill now. Apple what happens when this fails too? Will you pay my bills?

some people have had success by reinstalling Safari 15. there is a link in one of the above comments to the Apple link.

It's maybe not just reinstalling - there seems to be an updated version of Safari in those links. The key is to do it *after* the Security Update - which seemed to break everything.
