Safari 15 - keep sidebar bookmarks menu OPEN

Hi people!

Does anybody know a way to keep the bookmarks menu OPEN on Safari 15's sidebar, like it used to be? It's not the sidebar, only the bookmarks menu.

Now, everytime I activate the sidebar with the cursor I have to reopen the bookmarks menu again and again and again... It used to stay open, which helped navigating. Now it is ALWAYS closed when you open the sidebar.

A completely unecessary step that some "genius" added... How come someone thought this was "useful"???

Instead of adding steps on usability, they should be working on reducing steps. It seem they don't think anymore before doing things. A shame... Seem they never read Apple's UI Guidelines - if they still exist

Now working here with Safari 15.2 (15612.3.6.1.8, 15612) on (old) macOS Catalina 10.15.7, sort of.

What works is using the View menu or keyboard shortcut to open and close the bookmarks. Open with Ctrl+Cmd+1 and the last-opened bookmark is open in the outline hierarchy (yay!). Now close and re-open with the Tab Group button like we've been doing for years, and we're back to the two-entry sidebar with closed Bookmarks and Reading List.

So we'll all have to retrain our finger muscle memory to use Ctrl+Cmd+1to open and close the Bookmarks menu every time.

Thanks for finding this!

Pinky's method lets you do the same thing as before, just not by clicking.

Enter Ctrl+Cmd+1 to open the bookmarks fully extended, with the last-used place selected, as before.

Now use Ctrl+Cmd+1 again or click the button to close the bookmarks.

As long as you use Ctrl+Cmd+1 to open the bookmarks, you get the old behavior we're all used to. (You can also use View > Open Bookmarks Sidebar.)

This is so annoying! I just went to the trouble of submitting the below feedback:

________________________________________________________

"Please restore the previous behaviour of Safari where Bookmarks were immediately visible upon clicking the button to display the side bar. After upgrading to Safari 15, every time I click the side bar I'm presented with an almost empty column that contains just two items - Bookmarks and reading list. I'm sick of having to click again now every time I want to access my bookmarks.

Yes, I am aware of the Favourites bar - I have already filled it with my frequently accessed sites. My 'Bookmarks' contains a lot more sites that I need to access but on a less frequent but ongoing basis and the additional step to access them is annoying.

Please identify the clown who made this change and slap them."

________________________________________________________

If they don't want to restore the previous behaviour, then I hope they will at least provide a way that I can move my Bookmarks from the Bookmarks folder to instead appear below the 'Bookmarks" and "Reading List" folders. As it stands these are the only two items that appear in an otherwise empty column, making it a pointless waste of space and productivity.

My friends. Watch this.

Safari is useful for only one purpose: to get Microsoft Edge.

I have WASTED tens of hours to report Safari bugs and UX improvements suggestions, like:

  • add SIMPLE useful button ADD BOOKMARK
  • add simple useful ICON like "star" - this webpage is already added.

And others. Waited for response for years.

They don't care. Lets punish them. Edge is WAY better.

Yeah, I was expecting this review on 15.1, 15.2 but I guess we'll NEVER see it.

This is called arrogance. They do something stupid but never assume it and force us on this dumb direction just to "prove" they're not wrong. It happened a lot during the Ive years. BUT at least they fixed the keyboard and returned the ports to the MacBook.

Maybe in, say, 5 years from now Apple fixes this "amazing new feature" - as Jony Ive loved to call his dumb "improvements"
