Safari 15 - keep sidebar bookmarks menu OPEN

Now working here with Safari 15.2 (15612.3.6.1.8, 15612) on (old) macOS Catalina 10.15.7, sort of.

What works is using the View menu or keyboard shortcut to open and close the bookmarks. Open with Ctrl+Cmd+1 and the last-opened bookmark is open in the outline hierarchy (yay!). Now close and re-open with the Tab Group button like we've been doing for years, and we're back to the two-entry sidebar with closed Bookmarks and Reading List.

So we'll all have to retrain our finger muscle memory to use Ctrl+Cmd+1to open and close the Bookmarks menu every time.

Pinky's method lets you do the same thing as before, just not by clicking.

Enter Ctrl+Cmd+1 to open the bookmarks fully extended, with the last-used place selected, as before.

Now use Ctrl+Cmd+1 again or click the button to close the bookmarks.

As long as you use Ctrl+Cmd+1 to open the bookmarks, you get the old behavior we're all used to. (You can also use View > Open Bookmarks Sidebar.)

mhneuffer, that is a superb analysis. Please take the time to repeat it in the context of a Safari 15 feedback report about this issue at https://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html. Apple engineers don't listen in on these community forums, or rarely do. But the Feedback, they do.

Everyone, I just did this.

Go to VIEW-->Show Bookmarks Sidebar. Bookmarks will open.

Then close, reopen Safari and voila, my Bookmarks were open by default.

Weird. I just tested it again. I'm on Monterey 12.1.

Try this. Open Safari to a known site, then make the Show Bookmarks change, close Safari, and then reopen it. What happens?

That is not what we wanted.

WHEN YOU CLICK ON SIDEBAR, BOOKMARKS must be visible!

I DON'T want sidebar always be open when i open Safari.

When i need my saved pages i simply click SIDEBAR and I chose.

New sistem is that now you have to click to open sidebar, then you have to click that bookmarks are visible. Horrible!

If they don't want to restore the previous behaviour, then I hope they will at least provide a way that I can move my Bookmarks from the Bookmarks folder to instead appear below the 'Bookmarks" and "Reading List" folders. As it stands these are the only two items that appear in an otherwise empty column, making it a pointless waste of space and productivity.

I quite agree about those "genius". I wrote to Apple feedback and suggest they get as many feedbacks as possible on this "enhancement"

Seem to work now (iPadOS 15.1). Keep bookmark open and use the sidebar button to un/hide sidebar😊

Show Bookmarks Sidebar by Default:

Then close, reopen Safari. Your Bookmarks Sidebar should be open by default.

I so agree with the substance and annoyance level of José's post.

Can Apple at least make keeping the bookmarks open a preference, so that those of us deeply bothered by this regression can go back to where it should be?

My friends. Watch this.

Safari is useful for only one purpose: to get Microsoft Edge.

I have WASTED tens of hours to report Safari bugs and UX improvements suggestions, like:

• add SIMPLE useful button ADD BOOKMARK
• add simple useful ICON like "star" - this webpage is already added.

And others. Waited for response for years.

They don't care. Lets punish them. Edge is WAY better.

Please apple, bring this under rated feature back. I have a wide screen monitor, so I like having the sidebar open at all times, and I like having those bookmarks there as easy glance as I jump between websites often.

I thought this was just ME.... that perhaps I'd clicked something wrong and LOST it. I agree it was very handy to have it open all the time. Makes my work harder now... I guess we won't get an answer ?
