iOS 15 Find My live location not working for one member of my family.

I have 4 people in my family (including myself). All four of us have iPhones and have upgraded to iOS 15. One of the main features I was interested in was the live location updates in the Find My app. Of the four of us, three of us show up as live location, but the fourth does not. It still shows up like previously... the location works, but it is updated every few seconds/minutes. Not live like the rest of us.

The phone that is not giving live updates is an iPhone XS Max.

The others that do work include an iPhone X, iPhone 11 Pro Max and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Given that the iPhone X is working, I am certain that this is not a phone model specific issue.

I have scoured the settings but have been unable to find what might be blocking the live updates. I have also searched the web and these forums. Perhaps my search terms are not good enough, but I typically can find answers, if they exist, before posting questions like this.

Does anyone know what I could be missing? Is there a setting somewhere that turns on/off the live updates in FindMy?

Thank you.

Yayyyy, here is a possible answer that has worked for me. This was from Apple. On the person's phone that is NOT showing LIVE on other peoples phones, have that person that you are struggling to see Live go to "Settings"........"FindMy"........"Share My Location". If the slider is showing ON, slide it to OFF, wait for a few seconds, then slide it back ON. I did this on my wife's iPhone and it now shows up on my phone as being Live. Good luck everyone. Let us know here if it works for you as it did for me.

Good luck, and Merry Christmas.

I had this problem as well but was able to solve it. I have 5 members in my family including me and all updated to latest ios15. Only my 1 daughters 13 pro would show live and my XS. Other 2 kids have XS and wife has a 13 pro. I removed the other 2 kids and wife from find my, went on there phones and signed them out of icloud, signed them back in and added them back to find my and it worked. You have to give it a minute when you add them back to find my. My wife's didn't work right of way so I repeated those steps and then it did. Hope it helps. Shouldn't have to jump thru hoops for it to work but at least it's working now.

I hope this helps someone.

I ran into the same problem, I ended up figuring it out and now everyone that I have in the Find My App is now saying live and is showing the exact location.

All you do is:

  1. go to settings
  2. click on the photo ID and name at the top of the screen
  3. click "Find My" around the middle of the screen
  4. click "Find My iPhone" at the very top of the screen
  5. make sure that it is on
  6. once find my iPhone is on there should be 3 options, saying "Find My iPhone", "Find My network", and "Send Last Location."
  7. Make sure all of those are turned on, the middle toggle, "Find My network" will ask for your Apple ID password.
  8. Follow the instruction it gives you. It will force you to make a passcode, I made a passcode on my phone, and it turned on, I made the password 0000 and once it turned on, I just turned the password back off again. The toggle still says on, and it now is saying live and working well, there is no longer a password on my iPhone.

If you want to know how to get the password follow directions below.

  1. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T TURN YOUR PHONE OFF.
  2. go back to the home setting page
  3. scroll down to "Face ID & Passcode"
  4. It will ask to enter your passcode; it should be the same one that you just entered to turn the toggle on.
  5. scroll down till it says "Turn Passcode Off"
  6. type in the same passcode and then it should be off.

The „problem“ is definetly the apple watch cellular. I have tested this with some friends. When you use a apple watch cellular, the location tracking runs always on apple watch (also when the watch is connected to the iphone). You can not choose between iphone and apple watch. When the apple watch is powered off, the live tracking works because then it will use only the iphone.

apple watch without cellular works fine.

i hope apple will fix this shortly

We think it's the Apple Watch too, the ones with cellular. Of the five people in the family, all with watches, the two that DON'T have cellular watches show up live (pulsing green circle) and the three that DO have cellular watches don't. My Mom has an iPhone 7 and a watch without cellular and shows up live, so it's not the phone model. Turning the watches off works for me sometimes, but the others not at all, and putting them in airplane mode doesn't work either. In "Find My" in settings on the phone, it says My Location is coming from This Device and Cellular Apple Watch, and there's no way to uncheck the watch there either. Hopefully it's a bug they will fix in the next update.

From what I understand, for Live location sharing to work you need 2 things:

  • both phones must be on iOS 15 (or above)
  • you must share your own location with the person that you want to follow Live

I found that it has nothing to do with the model of the phone, but Live sharing only works for the people I also share location with. If I follow someone but don't share my own location I don't get Live updates.

There's definitely issues with it getting working, but once it does start it's great. In my case, it's been working for a while now for everyone that I have in Find My. I have not tried adding any new people lately.

For the live updates to work, you do have to select a particular person and have the app focused on their specific location. Live does not work when all your contacts are shown on the map (the main "People" screen). I never expected that, but in thinking of this issue I wondered if some folks out there expect live to work on that view and show all their family/friends moving around the map. That screen still uses the 30 sec (or whatever) refresh.

Wish we would get some info from Apple as to why certain people do not show up as live at first. As of right now, everything is working for me and it is a nice feature. But when it was not working for me, it was frustrating. I suspect that you folks having issues with it will eventually see it start working. No telling when that will be though.

Hopefully it starts working for you guys soon.

Hi folks;

MAYBE GOOD NEWS

This is an update to my post of 12/1.

Today my wife went shopping and forgot her Apple Watch 6. After an hour or so I checked and her iPhone was on "LIVE" !!!

When she got home the phone switched back to "Now".

Being an engineer we started experiments.

We turned the phone OFF and nothing happened. HOWEVER, about an hour later it was on LIVE.

Turned the watch on and the LIVE immediately disappeared and went to Now.

Turned watch back off and after an hour or so it went LIVE.

Live goes off almost immediately but does not come back on for an hour or more once the watch is turned OFF.

Someone please give it a try and let me know if that solves the PROBLEM and then APPLE might try to fix the problemm so my wife can wear her watch again.

Hey there,

I have had this issue with my iPhone 12 Mini. It was very frustrating. I did the exact same as you, I searched and searched for answers. There was one last step I had not tried. I factory reset my device and restored from iCloud back up. Eureka! My live location now works on my phone when my friends are viewing my location.

Hope this helps you.

Go to SETTINGS, click on the APPLE ID & PHOTO at the top of the settings page, click on "FIND MY", click on "FIND MY IPHONE" at the top of the page, make sure everything is on.

The middle toggle should be easy to turn on if you have a password on your iPhone. If not follow the instructions below:

  1. Click the toggle to turn it on. (For the toggle that says "Find My network"
  2. It should ask for an Apple ID passcode, type your Apple ID passcode in.
  3. It should say something like needing additional protection. So, click "Continue"
  4. It should then tell you to put a password on you iPhone.
  5. Type in a easy password that you will remember. I did 0000.
  6. once you finish setting up a password, everything should then be on, and Live Mode will start working.

After you have the live mode, you can turn the password off again and everything will still be working the same.

  1. Go to Face ID & Passcode
  2. type in the password you put in
  3. scroll down to "turn passcode off"
  4. type in the same password
  5. and then you shouldn't have a password on you iPhone and you should still have Live.

This is the only way I could get Live Mode on my iPhone and it works fine; I no longer have the password on my iPhone either.

I think you are conflating 2 things here.

It's a good idea to check that all 3 toggles are active, but they should be by default (15.x) and a password is not required to toggle network unless you have none set (if you have FaceID enabled, you cannot actually remove it at all). The fact you are being asked for a password isn't related to find friends, but it's a feature that needs security enabled.

The main issue remains a bug that re-materializes for live 'friends' even after you remove and re-add them, or you turn Find My off and on - and it's a 15.x bug introduced with "live". I think for a material fix we are waiting for 15.3.

Hey!!! I wonder if their is a conflict with the Apple Watch and the iPhones? 🤔 As you can see where it says My location it says ( This device and Cellular Apple Watches.. Why I say this is because my parents don’t have a Apple Watch and it shows LIVE for the both of them but my husband and I have a Apple Watch and ours doesn’t show LIVE.. This is just a thought.. **** it seem as if we gotta figure this issue out our dang self lol 😂
