iOS 15 Find My live location not working for one member of my family.

I have 4 people in my family (including myself). All four of us have iPhones and have upgraded to iOS 15. One of the main features I was interested in was the live location updates in the Find My app. Of the four of us, three of us show up as live location, but the fourth does not. It still shows up like previously... the location works, but it is updated every few seconds/minutes. Not live like the rest of us.

The phone that is not giving live updates is an iPhone XS Max.

The others that do work include an iPhone X, iPhone 11 Pro Max and an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Given that the iPhone X is working, I am certain that this is not a phone model specific issue.

I have scoured the settings but have been unable to find what might be blocking the live updates. I have also searched the web and these forums. Perhaps my search terms are not good enough, but I typically can find answers, if they exist, before posting questions like this.

Does anyone know what I could be missing? Is there a setting somewhere that turns on/off the live updates in FindMy?

Thank you.

iPhone XS

Thank you for the reply, Sean. Glad to know it’s not only me, but sorry to hear you are having the issue as well.

I received my iPhone 13 today and, after setting it all up, now only one of my family shows up as live. Also, when my wife got home, she is seeing the others as live while I am not.

I hope apple can sort this out soon. It really is a nice feature when it is working correctly.

It's working fine with the same iPhone XS Max now. And at the time, the XS Max that was not showing up as live for me on my 12 pro max was showing up on an 11 pro max as live. And at the same time, when the XS Max was not showing up as live, an iPhone X in my family was (and still is) also showing up as live.

So the live feature does work on iPhone X generation phones.

The phones I currently have working with live are:

  • 13 Pro Max
  • 12 Pro Max
  • 11 Pro Max
  • XS Max
  • X

From what I understand, for Live location sharing to work you need 2 things:

  • both phones must be on iOS 15 (or above)
  • you must share your own location with the person that you want to follow Live

I found that it has nothing to do with the model of the phone, but Live sharing only works for the people I also share location with. If I follow someone but don't share my own location I don't get Live updates.

I ran into the same problem, I ended up figuring it out and now everyone that I have in the Find My App is now saying live and is showing the exact location.

All you do is:

  1. go to settings
  2. click on the photo ID and name at the top of the screen
  3. click "Find My" around the middle of the screen
  4. click "Find My iPhone" at the very top of the screen
  5. make sure that it is on
  6. once find my iPhone is on there should be 3 options, saying "Find My iPhone", "Find My network", and "Send Last Location."
  7. Make sure all of those are turned on, the middle toggle, "Find My network" will ask for your Apple ID password.
  8. Follow the instruction it gives you. It will force you to make a passcode, I made a passcode on my phone, and it turned on, I made the password 0000 and once it turned on, I just turned the password back off again. The toggle still says on, and it now is saying live and working well, there is no longer a password on my iPhone.

If you want to know how to get the password follow directions below.

  1. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T TURN YOUR PHONE OFF.
  2. go back to the home setting page
  3. scroll down to "Face ID & Passcode"
  4. It will ask to enter your passcode; it should be the same one that you just entered to turn the toggle on.
  5. scroll down till it says "Turn Passcode Off"
  6. type in the same passcode and then it should be off.

Follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to settings.
  2. Click on the apple ID and picture at the very top
  3. click Find My around the middle of the screen
  4. click Find My iPhone at the very top
  5. Make sure it says on and that the three toggles are green (that means all of them are on)
  6. the middle toggle, "Find My network" should be on
  7. To turn the middle toggle on, click the toggle and it should ask you for a password, type in the password for your Apple ID.
  8. It should then ask for a password.
  9. Make the password like 0000 or something simple so you remember it.
  10. once you made a password, it should then be on and be working
  11. If you already have a password, then you should be able to turn this on no problem.
  12. If you don't have a password, you will have to make a password and then turn it off again after you make one.

Not sure why I had to have a password but it's the only way for it to work.

To turn the password off again, go to settings, Face ID & Passcode, enter the passcode you put in, and then scroll down to turn passcode off, and then re-enter the passcode one more time and then you should be good.

Now go into the Find My iPhone app and make sure it says live.

Go to SETTINGS, click on the APPLE ID & PHOTO at the top of the settings page, click on "FIND MY", click on "FIND MY IPHONE" at the top of the page, make sure everything is on.

The middle toggle should be easy to turn on if you have a password on your iPhone. If not follow the instructions below:

  1. Click the toggle to turn it on. (For the toggle that says "Find My network"
  2. It should ask for an Apple ID passcode, type your Apple ID passcode in.
  3. It should say something like needing additional protection. So, click "Continue"
  4. It should then tell you to put a password on you iPhone.
  5. Type in a easy password that you will remember. I did 0000.
  6. once you finish setting up a password, everything should then be on, and Live Mode will start working.

After you have the live mode, you can turn the password off again and everything will still be working the same.

  1. Go to Face ID & Passcode
  2. type in the password you put in
  3. scroll down to "turn passcode off"
  4. type in the same password
  5. and then you shouldn't have a password on you iPhone and you should still have Live.

This is the only way I could get Live Mode on my iPhone and it works fine; I no longer have the password on my iPhone either.

Hey!!! I wonder if their is a conflict with the Apple Watch and the iPhones? 🤔 As you can see where it says My location it says ( This device and Cellular Apple Watches.. Why I say this is because my parents don’t have a Apple Watch and it shows LIVE for the both of them but my husband and I have a Apple Watch and ours doesn’t show LIVE.. This is just a thought.. **** it seem as if we gotta figure this issue out our dang self lol 😂

Same here. My friends have iPhone x, 12, 13's IOS 15 and are on good cellular and VERY good wifi

When live DOES work it works great but most of the time its very intermittent, it may or may not work.

There doesn't seem to be any reason why this happens. One friend will be at home all day and he'll be live all the time and yet another friend will be doing the same and he'll be "NOW" all day ... or vice versa.

Possibly apples network cant handle all the live location requests ?

There's definitely issues with it getting working, but once it does start it's great. In my case, it's been working for a while now for everyone that I have in Find My. I have not tried adding any new people lately.

For the live updates to work, you do have to select a particular person and have the app focused on their specific location. Live does not work when all your contacts are shown on the map (the main "People" screen). I never expected that, but in thinking of this issue I wondered if some folks out there expect live to work on that view and show all their family/friends moving around the map. That screen still uses the 30 sec (or whatever) refresh.

Wish we would get some info from Apple as to why certain people do not show up as live at first. As of right now, everything is working for me and it is a nice feature. But when it was not working for me, it was frustrating. I suspect that you folks having issues with it will eventually see it start working. No telling when that will be though.

Hopefully it starts working for you guys soon.
