iPhone 13 Camera is blurry

Hello,

I’ve just received my iPhone 13 Pro and instantly noticed that especially the front camera quality in low light is horrendous. Coming from an iPhone X, the difference is literally night and day. The front camera seems to have some kind of beauty or over-smoothing effect on and the pictures really do look unacceptable. My colleague has the same problem with his 13 Pro Max and across the internet there have been multiple discussions about this.

I asked for:

1️⃣_Being able to shoot without this Oil paint effect/ software noise reduction added by the software (pic on the left)

2️⃣_Being able to shoot without HDR (like in previous iPhone models)

(pics from isazavakos - pls note differences in hair, eyelashes, make up. Picture on the right is a RAW using camera on Lightroom for iOS, as a workaround to avoid this effect)

Left: iPhone native camera app Right: iPhone Adobe Lightroom Camera iOS

That’s not the point.

iPhone 13 pro camera is amazing but it would be much better if this 2 things would be fixed/restored.

i m talking about:

-not having the possibility to deactivate smart HDR for pics (why not having the possibility to decide if using HDR or not?

Sometimes is creating cartoonish skies or it lighten up and flattens lights on faces. This option was available on previous iPhones)

Issue taking picture with telephoto with native camera app who’s sometimes blurring details on faces creating a sort of paint effect that I ve seen before only on other brands phone .

this last “issue” is not present shooting with Lightroom iOS app’s camera.

why?

i tested outside with light too and checked to be sure that both shot were using telephoto lens.

cheers

Or in bright lighting indoors.

Digital zoom has never given a clear picture, and cannot by definition because you can’t just create pixels that don’t exist despite what you see on TV detective shows and in movies.

Zoom has always dropped from optical zoom to digital zoom in lower light, and sadly there is no easy way to tell except to notice how bad the image becomes.

This has been true of all zoom lens iPhones.

I’m having a similar issue on my 13 pro max. After I take a photo and go view it, it is blurry the a second or two later later it automatically adjusts and shows a crisper photo. Turning off the the Lens correction doesn’t fix the problem! @applesupport - please make a note and track this annoying problem!

You have iCloud Photo turned on. The photo is uploading to the cloud, hence the blur to clarity as it uploads. This is normal, so there is nothing to fix.

You seem to think you are writing Apple here. You're NOT. This is a user to user only forum. Feel free to tell Apple your thoughts, but given this is normal to begin with, you'd be wasting your time. You can use this link --> https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone/

I also just noticed that any picture taken with the front facing camera reports it’s 7 MP when I click on the photo information icon. How is that possible? Isn’t the front facing camera 12 MP? My iPhone X had the 7 MP front facing camera. I’m starting to think that someway somehow when I transferred that phone to my iPhone 13 Pro Max, it messed with the front facing camera settings. It’s actually very blurry when taking photos or on FaceTime in lower light situations. All of my friends who also purchased the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max have began reporting the same issue as well with the front facing camera.

All zoom other than .5x, 1x and 3x (assuming bright light and an iPhone 13 Pro Max) is a digital zoom, which will degrade the image somewhat.

Different Androids do different things, but this is an area where Apple cannot "step up" anything. If the resolution of the Android screen is low enough it may appear digital zoom is lossless, but it's not.

For example, if you had 4K video but were viewing it on a 1994 CRT-based TV, you could digitally zoom in about 3x before you would notice the picture fuzzing out because of the comparatively poor resolution of the viewing device.

The only time you can digitally zoom in on an image without the picture getting blurry and/or losing detail is on a crime or spy show on TV or in a movie; in real life, never.

No sarcasm meant; given the compromises made in uploading a photo here as compared to a photo site, it does look pretty good though clearly there are a few issues.

What were the lighting conditions under which the photo was taken? Are you sure no processing was done?

Some of what you see will normally happen if it was originally an HEIC photo and turned into too lossy of a JPEG, as depending upon the settings of the transcoder.

and switching to digital zoom in broad daylight.

If it were broad daylight that would be one thing; it's not, it's when light is below a certain threshold.

On your DSLR it would be the equivalent as if you have it set to not allow the shutter to fire if the photo would be underexposed.

Apple has long had the photographic philosophy of doing a digital zoom if the resulting image from the optical zoom lens would be too underexposed to process.

It's annoying that Apple still hasn't implemented any kind of annunciator to let the user know whether the zoom is optical or digital, but it's clear it's not something they want to add.

hi!

im having the same issue? i upgraded from an xr and am considering going back? the phone works well but one of the major points was the camera and it’s a little disappointing? the front camera seems to have a smoothing effect that i hate bad the back camera unfocuses and blurs anytime i try to zoom in. what’s the point of “optical zoom” if the camera can’t focus? also if i try to zoom in to take a photo in any lighting that isn’t direct daylight then the photo comes out looking deep fried? many of my zoomed in back camera photos looks like there’s been an automatic ‘sharpening’ affect added to it just because i was inside.
