iPhone 13 Camera is blurry

Hello,

I’ve just received my iPhone 13 Pro and instantly noticed that especially the front camera quality in low light is horrendous. Coming from an iPhone X, the difference is literally night and day. The front camera seems to have some kind of beauty or over-smoothing effect on and the pictures really do look unacceptable. My colleague has the same problem with his 13 Pro Max and across the internet there have been multiple discussions about this.

I asked for:

1️⃣_Being able to shoot without this Oil paint effect/ software noise reduction added by the software (pic on the left)

2️⃣_Being able to shoot without HDR (like in previous iPhone models)

(pics from isazavakos - pls note differences in hair, eyelashes, make up. Picture on the right is a RAW using camera on Lightroom for iOS, as a workaround to avoid this effect)

iPhone 11 took really good photos. But to suggest an iPhone 11 is demonstrably better than iPhone 13 Pro is way off the mark. I've owned iPhone 3G, 4, 5, 6, 7, X, XS Max, 12 Pro Max and now 13 Pro Max. My iPhone 11 photos don't hold a candle to the photos I'm getting with my 13 Pro Max.

But then, if you are as you say, a Professional Photographer, you know well that the eye behind the camera is what makes the most difference. A Pro should know how to use the tools available to them far more than someone with no photographic skills other than point and shoot.

Take a look at this for instance the first pic taken in portrait mode car was perfectly still and I snapped a shot if you zoom in its good quality and in focus. Now take a look at the second pic it was taken with standard lens in normal mode straight afterwards if you zoom in its out of focus and blurry. This is happening with the main lens all the time for me its just not crisp that's not down to me not focusing properly as everything works fine in portrait mode.

The remote photo doesn’t surprise me; the aperture of the 13 Pro Max’s camera is ƒ/1.5, the 12 Pro Max is ƒ/1.6.

The focus point is on the couch and the remote is far enough away that’s a depth of field difference between the two, not a bug.

A rough calculation shows that the 13 Pro Max’s lens should have about 1.2” less depth of focus to the front, and given how the remote is already beginning to blur in the 12 Pro Max photo, that seems just about right.

@lobsterghost1 I think that no-one here wants to return their phone, this is absolutely not an option. What we're trying to understand here is why on earth pictures are worse on the latest phone! And I'm sorry, but I really can't understand why you're trying to "excuse" Apple, this is a major problem, considering that the 13 pro and pro max are advertised especially for photograph.

That's the thing, I've looked and compared, and from mine, they are in no way worse, and each of the photos posted as "proof" that they are has some photographic issue that can explain why that photo may look worse that can be easily explained by technical differences between the two devices that are not bugs or defects, but just what happens when photographic parameters are changed.

The fact that Apple will remove some of the things that apparently create issues for some is a good thing, and if there is a focusing issue that crops up in some situations, that will be a positive as well.

Hello ~ I have yet to find a camera whether it was a $50.00 one or one that was $4500.00 plus my lens that I could take out of my pocket and shoot a perfect picture with….never. These iPhone cameras …in my opinion and for entry level photography and up offer more portability and ease of use than most cameras on the market today. I guarantee you we could debate the issue from now on and with every single camera ever built and find some flaw. It is simple …learn to work around what you see as a flaw or return it. We cannot change the camera or the physics that guide it’s use.

Hello ~ What else can be said? I love my other cameras but what a hassle they are and to be honest some of the best candid shots…which I personally love the most…all over the last say 8 years have been taken with my iPhones. Actually one of my children thought the video I took of their wedding was better than the professional one she paid dearly for. Nothing is perfect especially in photography right? So my vote is for the iPhone each and every time…pretty awesome to me :)

I’m having lots of problems with my new 13 pro.. Everything is blurry then it suddenly focuses but I have no of control sometimes I wait and keep moving around to get it to focus on the macro level my iPhone 11 was much better at taking macro pictures.. I use this for my business every day I take pictures of little tiny items I’m not sure that this phone is going to work for me.. It’s hard to get it to take pictures when I get close..

Because it is. Likely due to the higher resolution and the upload to iCloud process. There's a lot more data uploading to the cloud. Once uploaded, as you have seen, the clarity of the photo is fine. If the photo uploaded out of focus and never became focused, then you'd have an issue. But it's not, so you don't. Don't look for issues where there are none.

You are very wrong I had iPhone 11 Pro and it worked great for taking macro photos this new iPhone 13 is junk..

The problem is it will not focus or go into macro mode you sit there and wait in the phone does nothing it takes up lots of valuable time and it’s a waste of my time because I take hundreds of macro photos every day.. Apple needs to fix this or they need to give me my $1700 back for this phone and buy me another iPhone 11 😡

This is disgusting 🤢
