Xcode update via App Store take several days now. Will it ever finish?

Some months ago I boot a MacBook Air M1 (8G/256G). As a developer I installed Xcode 12 successfully.

Now I tried to update from 12.5.1 to version 13. This update is now running for several days. No restart or anything else helped to finish or stop it.

What can I do?

With my other machines (MacBook Pro from 2014 and 2017) I know from the past that Xcode updates are really difficult to handle. Why has it to be so complicated? As a professional developer I think, the whole update process has to be restructured. As it is now, it's really annoying and frustrating.

FWIW, I have the 8G/512G MacBook Air. My update to 12.5.1 took 1 1/2 hours. The update to 13 took almost 2 hours. While excruciatingly slow, still completed. I could have installed a couple macOS systems in less time. It seems that each Xcode update is taking longer and longer and will eventually end up taking 1/2 a day to install.

In your case, something may have got borked and you may want to restore to your Time Machine backup before you started the update to 13. Then uninstall Xcode and then install Xcode 13 clean. Which I am beginning to think these days may be the faster approach anyway.

"Why has it to be so complicated?" I agree. I used to think updating Visual Studio was bad but this is getting even worse!

If you are having issues see:

note for developers—App Store submissions require current Xcode.
