..One idea would be to replace the entire adapter, cords and all
with a newer one; here's an example of a quality adapter. The
brand isn't available or rare, anymore. Images on site show it.

That it seems rather of a generic build. I had one exactly like this;
used with iBook G4; was in great shape, when I gave it all away.
And my iBook G4 had two original Apple adapters, one unused.

The small 'power output end' on official Apple iBook/PowerBook G4 adapters
hard to replicate; & to find a good working sample, is now rarer than expected.
Generic does as well, but does not illuminate orange/green status indications.
Avoid the older early G3 clamshell 'yo-yo' adapter from colors iBook;
that adapter isn't same as later White G3/G4 power adapter's output.
