Unable to send email to Hide My Email alias

I followed the instructions and created a iCloud+ Hide My Email alias address from my iPhone. However when I try to send email to the alias from an unrelated email account, the message bounces back with a 550 5.1.1 address not found error. I have tried creating multiple aliases and have waited days between creation and the attempt to send an email to allow propagation. Has anyone else run into this issue? The email below is currently active but I can’t send emails to it

I’ve been trying to get this to work since iOS was released last Monday. It finally started working right after I posted my question. I deleted the alias in the screen shot above.
