iOS 15 Podcasts app - Up Next gone screwy

NB: I listen to a lot of podcasts.

Since updating to iOS 15, the Up Next queue is not working correctly. So I add all the upcoming episodes I plan to listen to from various different casts to Up Next in that order. But later I find most of those episodes have disappeared from Up Next -- only a single podcast's episodes remain. What's more, those episodes don't have the handle that allows you to re-order them, as when you add them to the queue manually.

I tried unsubscribing from that one podcast and deleting all its episodes, then re-subscribing. Unfortunately the same thing happened. I experimented with a different podcast app but didn't like its lack of features, and I don't want to spend days or even weeks working out which app I prefer. (My favourite Android app, Podcast Addict, unfortunately isn't available on iOS.)

It's quite inconvenient to have the queue obliterated for no reason, needless to say. My preferred order is to listen to each podcast episode in the order they came out, oldest to newest. Would it make a difference if I let the program just plow through playing all of the episodes of that one podcast? Will I have to give up on Up Next and just start playing each episode manually? Is this a known bug that will be fixed in the next release? Any input appreciated.

Yep, same here. Podcasts is just shamefully poorly built right now and getting worse. Major issues:

  1. Queue is frequently wiped for no reason. Very frustrating as I have lots of podcasts that I don't listen to every episode of so I keep a pretty complex queue to manage my listening. In a number of cases I'll have individual episodes of a podcast I don't subscribe to and then, when the queue is wiped, I can't remember those random episodes and re-add them.
  2. The current episode is frequently automagically (autocraptastically) added to the top of my queue so it plays a second time and I have to skip it the second time.

Honestly this is just pathetic basic engineering problems and the software team should be ashamed that this is the state of a product of theirs.

Same here I’ve had loads for problems since the update! Losing all my up nexts, replaying the same episodes, deciding if I’m half way through an episode that it’s going to play something else at random because I paused it. It’s driving me mad!! I’m thinking of just finding another app to use now as it’s annoying when I’m driving!

Same problems as described by many users in this conversation. I switched to Overcast and I am well satisfied. I see no reason to return to the Apple podcast player even if Apple eventually fixes all the problems. Among other things, Overcast does a much better job at syncing my Podcasts across the two different phones that I use. When I switch phones, Overcast always resumes the same podcast in the same spot that I was listening to on my other phone. Overcast allows multiple playlists, but also has a default playlist that includes all unplayed episodes of all podcasts that I am subscribed to. On both the default playlist and user created playlist, it is easy to re-order the playlist just by driving a podcast to a new location. Using Overcast, It is much easier than when using the Apple podcast player to delete/remove a particular podcast I do not want to play. There are also more flexible options for playing speed. I have to think Apple for giving me the incentive to try a different podcast player. Were it not for the new bug, I would never have considered switching.

Some here buddy! I listen to a lot of News podcasts from different Shows. I want to listen to the latest released Episodes of the news from all the Shows. This is not going to be from the same Show. "Up Next" continues playing the Episodes from the same Show in order even though the episode is not listed in the Up Next window. Why in the world would someone want to hear news from 2 days-weeks-months ago??? The Up Next should look at my library and order the shows in order of release date & time and play the newest in first. Why is this so hard??

I’ve been having the very same problem, and it’s driving me crazy!! I’m glad to see that I am not alone here, but it’s already December and it’s still happening???!!!

I line up my up next podcasts every day, and it is super annoying to have to redo it several times. Right now I’m about to go on a several hour road trip, and it will not go well if I have to keep pulling over to redo my list.

Not just an Apple Podcasts issue.

13 Pro Max, iOS 15.0.2.

Castbox & Spotify BOTH stop anytime the screen locks or I swap to a different app. This is only started happening in the last month and a half or so. Are used to be able to throw on a podcast and navigate around on my phone even play games that I had turn the sound off on while I listen to my podcast. I never had any audio problems for this phone. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the apps, re-downloading my podcasts and playlists, rebooting the phone multiple times, resetting network settings and everything short of completely wiping my iPhone. Cannot figure out what’s going on or why

I am also having this issue - the podcast queue does not match what is listed as "Up Next" and the "Up Next" is taking priority over the queue I created of how I want to listen to my podcasts. I have had an overwhelming response to start using a new app, which is beyond frustrating as I am behind in some episodes and will lose that (without lots more effort on my part) because of this feature change. I have poked around settings and not finding anything. Truly its a big disrupter to my work day to have to continually find the next podcast to list to after an episode.

Also important to note: When the "Up Next" item is played, when I select the podcast episode I wanted the queue will once again be there, but not used within the app.

Overall - super annoying and if not fixed will have to use another app.

What I've found is that if I pause on an episode that doesn't have more in the queue (so, if I've made my settings play oldest episodes of that show first, and I'm on the most recent episode) it won't load more episodes in the up next and will continue to follow my set list. This means I can never pause on an episode of Scam Goddess (I am ~30 behind) but can during an episode of You're Wrong About (because I'm current) with no issues. This is a nutty workaround and involves a lot of strategizing on my part but may explain why some people are seeing variable effects.

I’m having the exact same problem as everyone else here. It is SO frustrating when you create a list of episodes to listen to in “play next/up next” & it just vanishes. I have quite a few different podcasts I listen to & had a long list including new episodes of each podcast which is obviously now gone. But I can’t even put 1 episode in the up next because as soon as I exit the app & it’s gone! Apple please fix this. So many people are having the same problem so you have to acknowledge there is a problem on your end!

Same for me.. it was actually working as it should for a brief period of time, then, for some unknown reason, I’m back to where I was before: anything I add to the queue disappears for unknown reasons at unknown times (not immediately, but within the same day or over night). Also puzzling, but I could live with it if my chosen queue didn’t disappear, my “queue” has lots of episodes from one of my podcasts that I did not ask to be in the queue and I cannot delete or move them. I say “queue” because when I tell the app to put an episode in my queue and play it “last”, it thankfully puts it last in the queue of episodes I have specifically chosen to be in the queue. So I’m that sense I don’t care about all of that podcasts episodes being in the “queue”, but it shouldn’t be doing that.
