Loud Static blast while on calls with Airpod Pro's

Has anyone else ever been blasted in the ear with something that sounds like a dial-up modem from the '90s? It's happened to me 3 times now while talking on the phone and it comes through significantly louder than the person I'm talking to. To the point where my ears ring for some time after it happens.

It's now happened 3 times (which is where I'm drawing the line), over the last 3 months. I spend a lot of time on the phone with my Airpods in, but it's so loud that I'm thinking it's too dangerous to use them until I figure this out. My feeling is that it has to do with the other parties' carrier, but shouldn't the AirPods limit the decibels that are output from them?

The issue is that troubleshooting subjects me to the possibility that it happens again. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I have airpod pros, and a iPhone 13 Pro. The same issue happened with an iPhone 11 pro with the same airpods.
