iMac 21.5" 2017 Late 2012 Won't upgrade beyond Sierra due to missing firmware partition?

This is a very old iMac I gave friend and trying to rebuild it. Internal HD has died so booting off external SSD 2tb. Got it gradually up to Sierra but every time I try to go to anything higher (High Sierra, Mojave, or Catalina) it dies saying there is not a firmware partition.

I just got a Time Machine backup to run. No user data yet on it. I could find/buy a normal SATA drive if it's the SSD that's the issue. They are cheap so if that is solution let me know. I've been in and out of Recovery Partition, DIsk Utility etc. This Mac does support Catalina so what do I need to do?

How is the external SSD partitioned/formatted? It should be APFS for macOS 10.13 or higher.

Unfortunately you need a working internal drive with a properly partitioned & formatted drive in order to install macOS 10.13+ for the first time since the system firmware included in the installer requires it. I have confirmed this requirement several years ago when I first encountered the problem. It is a shame that Apple does not allow the system firmware updater to use the external drive especially when the OS is being installed to the external drive.
