Hello. On Big Sur, you can view the possible accents for a character by pressing and holding this key on your keyboard. Please note that this does not work in all apps.

Hello. Thanks for clarifying. If you haven't already, please try restarting your Mac to see if this resolves the issue.
If the issue persists following a reboot, check the key repeat settings on your Mac. You can view these under System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard. If the key repeat slider is set to off, special characters will not appear while holding down a key.

thanks Latranner, this is the issue:
I have been able to type in different languages pressing and holding the key on the keyboard, but now if I press and hold I just get the letter repeated but no longer the "accents window"
re-starting the computer did the trick...
I have no idea why it stopped working in the first place!
