I also had this problem. Since my native Apple apps worked with the carplay microphone I guessed it was Google Maps specific so I posted here as well

https://support.google.com/maps/thread/137359516/seems-like-google-maps-isn%E2%80%99t-using-car-microphone-with-apple-carplay-on-ios-15?hl=en

Anyway, after verifying that Google Maps had access to the microphone because it was working fine up until recently I thought maybe reinstalling would work and it did, but it took a couple of tries. Here's what didn't work and what did work for me

1. Didn't work

Uninstalled Google Maps.

Turned iPhone off

Turned iPhone on

Installed Google Maps

Launched Google Maps

Glimmer of hope.  It asks for permission to access location , microphone, and contacts.

I'm able to give access to microphone and contacts but not location.  If go

to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services Google Maps isn't

listed (Google Calendar is, but not Gmaps).

Turn iPhone off

Turn iPhone on

Google Maps appears in Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services and I grant it access

Test with microphone using CarPlay is unsuccessful

2. Did work.

Uninstalled Google Maps.

Turned iPhone off

Turned iPhone on

Installed Google Maps

Turned iPhone off

Connected USB cable in car for CarPlay

Turned iPhone on

Launched Google Maps

Am able to grant access to location services, microphone, and contacts

Tests using microphone in car seems to work.  Will continue to test and validate.

I have the same issue on My wireless CarPlay (BMW X5 F15 and GLE 2019)after update to iOS 15 +two updates. Voice commands are not working in Google and Waze map apps. Moreover I need reboot Waze every first time after enter destination, only after reboot app GPS tracking starts work. Please fix it, all me friends have some issue, this is not acceptable for Apple.

I have the same problem. I have an Apple iPhone 11 ProMax. I have a 2019 BMW X5, and use CarPlay. After v15.1 was loaded on my phone, the microphone feature on the car stopped working. The microphone seems broken on both CarPlay and the system that came with th vehicle. I was on the support line for over an hour, and we tried everything apple support suggested in the generic service bulletin this thread.

Rest assure that after this, I will disable automatic os update, and make a full backup with the iTunes app before updating iOS.

This may be a Capt. Obvious, but it's therapy for me. So here

goes...When in my 2021 Chevy Silverado, iPhone 8+ (Vers iOS 15.2.1), wireless

connection, iPhone off, Apple CarPlay (iOS update 15.2.1)/Google Maps (Vers

6.1.3) selected, when I push the Search Microphone.....I usually get the

onscreen "Can't Hear You" notice.

I also notice there is no Orange Dot showing up on the the

left side of the screen. It usually takes quite a few attempts to

"Cancel" and retry the Search/Microphone button before I am able to

see the Orange Dot (telling me the Microphone is listening). When I do get the

Orange Dot, the Search Works Every Time!

I've done all the recommended, Turn On/Off USB, Reload Google

Maps, etc...Apple Maps hears me just fine!

My Question is this;

Why the Intermittent Orange Dot (Microphone is

listening)?...Is it an Apple or Google thing?...And When will it be fixed?

Hello everyone,

I too am experiencing the problem - I updated from 13.6.1 to 15.3.1 - I purposely waited so long because of all the problems reported (Forbes.com).

I've now got multiple issues that are "intermittent". I've got an iPhone 8 and a Chevy Cruz 2018. When I press the "voice button" on the car console to make a phone call (i.e. Call Home), Siri hesitates and then says "there seems to be a problem, please try again" - well you know that never works out despite repeated attempts.

Also, using voice commands from the Gmap mic icon on carplay doesn't work at all. (Yes, I've got Siri voice enabled).

*The worst bummer is I no longer get the "turn by turn" audio instructions while driving - but I DO get a "BOOP" sound (which I found is the indication that there is an instruction or turn coming up - but for some reason is not able to be played).

My mom is in the hospital (I know, not relevant), so I have not been able to "fully" experiment with all the suggestions - but toggling on/off the bluetooth options (from within the Google Maps app>settings>Navigation>play voice over Bluetooth and Play as Bluetooth call) didn't make any difference.

Perhaps most frustrating is that those turn by turn instructions can "suddenly start working" while driving. I was coming home from the hospital and getting only the "BOOP" tone before turns, then as I near my home, the voice suddenly started working, "turn left in 100 feet" - and it continued to work right up to me pulling up to my garage.

Needless to say, like all of you folks, not having audio instructions is a nightmare. And why both voice calling and Gmaps voice commands are "intermittent" without any re-producable settings/changes is upsetting, to say the least.

If anyone could comment or help me, I would be very grateful. Thanks to all. (my first post to the forum in case you haven't guessed-lol).
