IOS 15 carplay voice input issue

I also had this problem. Since my native Apple apps worked with the carplay microphone I guessed it was Google Maps specific so I posted here as well

Anyway, after verifying that Google Maps had access to the microphone because it was working fine up until recently I thought maybe reinstalling would work and it did, but it took a couple of tries. Here's what didn't work and what did work for me

1. Didn't work

Uninstalled Google Maps.

Turned iPhone off

Turned iPhone on

Installed Google Maps

Launched Google Maps

Glimmer of hope.  It asks for permission to access location , microphone, and contacts.

I'm able to give access to microphone and contacts but not location.  If go

to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services Google Maps isn't

listed (Google Calendar is, but not Gmaps).

Turn iPhone off

Turn iPhone on

Google Maps appears in Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services and I grant it access

Test with microphone using CarPlay is unsuccessful

2. Did work.

Uninstalled Google Maps.

Turned iPhone off

Turned iPhone on

Installed Google Maps

Turned iPhone off

Connected USB cable in car for CarPlay

Turned iPhone on

Launched Google Maps

Am able to grant access to location services, microphone, and contacts

Tests using microphone in car seems to work.  Will continue to test and validate.

I’ve managed to find a workaround for this now that I’m on iOS 15.2 - when searching for an address in CarPlay and touching the microphone icon, I get the standard failure message, however once I cancel that and it comes back to the main search page, upon touching the microphone icon a second time it works just fine. I did this several times with success today and can confirm my phone was locked each time. So basically, if it fails, just try again!

A couple of weeks ago Apple Support reached out to me and we reproduced the problem in a couple of vehicles, collected logs, and I sent them to Apple. Last night I saw iOS 15.2.1 was available and one of the fixes was:

Third-party CarPlay apps may not respond to input

I installed it this morning and on the first try the voice input on Google Maps worked. I'll keep testing and report back.

After upgrading to 15.2.1 I tested Google maps and the problem persisted.

Then I deleted Google Maps and reinstalled it.

The first time I tried it it said go to settings and turn on your microphone access for Google Maps.

Once I did that it now works fine. So far.

I have the same problem. Using wireless apple carplay over "Car2Play" device.

Today I tried to connect to carplay over USB and when I activated Google maps voice search over carplay it asked me to allow access while the iphone screen is locked. I accepted and it worked.

I then tried again over wireless carplay and it still didn't work. Then I tried again over wireless carplay while keeping my iPhone's screen unlocked and it worked. I've tested and re-tested and it works. So now Apple just needs to allow me to do the same with the screen locked...

Let me know if anyone else can reproduce my experience: Simply keep you screen unlocked and try to do a google voice search over carplay...

I updated iOS to 15.2.1 which said it would fix microphone problems with certain apps. Apparently, Google Maps was part of Apple’s bug fix.

Car: CX9 - Azami 2019

• Upgraded to 15.2
• Uninstalled and reinstalled Google maps
• Connected and voice searched google maps - asked me to enable mic permissions via settings
• There was a prompt already on the phone to which I did "Allow"

The above worked for me ( 3 times so far). If the issue comes back, I'll come back and edit post to let ya'll know

On Dec 9 I installed Google Maps update 5.87 on my iPhone 8. After this update, my CarPlay voice input for Google Maps started working for the first time since installing iOS 15. (I am currently running iOS 15.1.) Not sure if this fixed it permanently. Time will tell.

I’m having the same issue with using microphone in Google Maps on iOS 15.1

After some troubleshooting I found a workaround.

The workaround I use is to use Siri to navigate with Google Maps. Press Siri/ voice control button on steering wheel or say Hey Siri when that is activated. Then say get me directions from place x to place y using Google Maps.

You will have to experiment with the Siri voice commands to get the desired results. For using Google Maps it is important to say to Siri ‘using Google Maps’

Hope this workaround will help others.

RUB92 all that did for me was open google maps with no directions but it started working properly after updating to 15.1. I know 15.1 isn't solving everyone's issue but it worked for me and I was having trouble with carplay in two different model cars.

I'm not sure this is an AppplceCarplay issue, but more a Google Maps challenge. If you use AppleMap, it all works fine. If you use AppleCarplay, with google map, you must first launch Google Map on your phone before the microphone works.

It is in this way that I experience the error

@bscardin I don't drive a BMW. But my issue resolved with the update to 15.1.

Finally! after update my phone to 15.2 the issue was gone.

Glad it’s not just me. It’s driving me up the wall

ive got a 2020 F40 m135i.

if you have the phone open it works. You can see the little orange dot appear to indicate the microphone is in use. Without doing that it doesn’t work.
