Apple TV 4K to tvOS 15 wireless audio sync issues

I updated my Apple TV 4K to tvOS 15 and now, all my *Apple* devices will not sync audio wirelessly. This includes AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max. Doesn’t matter what I’m watching, or what app/service I’m watching, the audio is out of sync. I tried using the calibrate wireless audio feature in the settings, but when I try it defaults the audio output to TV speakers which doesn’t have any problem…because it’s wired! So not sure what wireless audio sync is good for if it’s only checking if wired audio is synced. The closest fix I could find, but it’s still really out of sync, is setting my video output to 4K Dolby Vision and turning off Match Content and Frame Rate. The problem with that is the TV menus are not in HDR, so if I change my TV’s input and then go back to the Apple TV input channel, the screen starts flashing green and static until I power reset both the TV and the Apple TV. Everything worked flawlessly before the tvOS update…BUT, I have the new Apple TV 4K which doesn’t have a USB-C port…so I can’t downgrade it back to 14.7. Anyone else with similar issues?? I will add that when using my HomePod stereo pair as the default output, the audio seems to be in sync, but if I try to calibrate wireless audio to the HomePods, the Apple TV changes the audio output to TV speakers. And even though it seems to by synced with HomePods, if I temporarily change audio to headphones it goes completely out of sync. I’ve also tried defaulting Video output to every available option and tried wireless audio, still out of sync.

Hello,

I do have exactly the same problem. I check all my video and audio parameters but it fixes nothing.

I reseted the apple TV and updated the firmware but still the same issue.

Of course I rebooted all m network and devices.

I realized that the video is late vs the sound and also observed that the video is jerky then becomes late vs the audio when sending the audio to my Yamaha WXC50 via Airplay. Maybe it would help Apple to fix this.

This problem occurs since TvOS15 update. Was great before.

Thank you Apple team for letting us know what workaround shall we do to fix this.

Regards

Michaël

I have the same problem but only with AirPlay 1 speakers. AirPlay 2 works OK but sound settings is totally broken. I use my Apple TV 4k with a projector. The projector got tiny bad sounding speakers built in. In previous versions of tvOS I just had to select my AirPlay speaker instead of the built in speakers. This configuration has been flawless for years until tvOS 15.0. AirPlay to AirPlay 1 speakers is flaky at best and sound is out of sync. Just as annoying is the new settings for default speaker. The only option available to me is the projectors built in speakers (probably because tvOS find them through HDMI and assume it is a TV set and not a projector). My AirPlay 2 speaker works but can not be selected as the default speaker, only as a temporary speaker (why on earth make the difference is beyond me). The settings for temporary speakers does not persist so now I have to first deselect the projectors built in speakers AND select my AirPlay 2 speaker as a temporary speaker. And I have to do this every time I watch TV on my projector. I have been an Apple user since 1983 and this is by far the most underwhelming user experience I have had since then. Not being able to revert back to the previous version that worked flawlessly is adding insult to injury.

I sympathize. What makes me more frustrated is the added premium I end up paying to have all apple products assuming there would be flawless integration. But when it’s apple’s own products that are struggling to work together there’s a real problem. Also, small update on my progress: after downloading and using the “afteralpha” tvOS, the sync issue was gone, only to have returned worse than before. I’ve also noticed that watching any content from any service on ANY apple device (like iPhone or iPad) that has been updated to most recent OS also has audio sync issues using any of apple’s audio devices.

I have the exact same issue. When I switch Apple TV use airplay speakers, the video signal glitches and the audio sync slips out and gets worse the longer i leave it. Have spoken with Apple Help twice who have basically told me that its something to do with my 3rd party equipment which is strange because it worked absolutely fine before the update. I setup my system again with another AppleTV that we pre TVOS15 and it worked fine, unfortunately the auto update was still enabled and it updated to TVOS15 as well... Guess what....? I now have the same problem with the new Apple TV, so @APPLE I spent last night elimianting all third party equipment where possible, tried on a different TV, changed cables reconfigured where possible and its and issue with the Apple TV. Im not really interested in talking to your support again unless they acknowledge there is a known problem and they know how to fix it. Ironically, I have 1st Gen Apple TV that still works, I don't have all the apps and the menu is a bit clunky but at least I can watch the odd movie. APPLE..... PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE

That's the real thing!

I've rebuild everything in my setup until i found that unreleased .1 version fixed the airport issue...

Not a single work of acknowledgment from Apple. Totally useless phone support (the second time that i call it, the second time that it's useless...). So good products, marginal faults, but unable to address these faults in a correct way. As always

>Apple never acknowledged the problem was their end which is the frustrating thing.

Could not agree more. I have been an Apple customer since the 80s. Apple has had its ups and downs but I have stayed true to the brand. This "silent treatment" is really upsetting. I don't expect flawless products, what I expect is accountability. Be honest with your customers, come clean and admit that there is a bug in the current release and let us know you are working to fix it. That is something I would accept and respect but not this "silent treatment". It makes Apple look arrogant and uncaring, like they are for more than us customers. It is really sad because I want Apple to be the opposite...

Well, that’s great for you, but I have 3 latest-vintage 4K Apple TVs running 15.1 and up-to-date AirPods Max headphones that can’t stay in sync with them. The premium for Apple products used to be justified by the lack of these kinds of nagging difficulties, but the fact that they are so widespread across their products (just earlier a paired set of HomePods refused to rate a song for me, for example) and linger for so long (or come and go) is beyond frustrating. The solution provided is always log out of everything and set it up from scratch again, and that used to work for a lot of things! But these days I’m sad to say a lot of the issues are bugs that simply aren’t getting worked out. What’s the point of spending hundreds on these headphones and hundreds more on the Apple TVs for supposedly great home theater experience when everyone else is asleep, if none of the audio syncs up with the pictures (not to mention the audible breaks in audio as the sync slips further)?
