Upload to iCloud Paused (messages) OCT 2021

Hi all,

I just got my new iPhone 13 Pro and I’m running iOS15.1.

I’ve noticed other unresolved threads relating to an annoying message saying “Upload to iCloud Paused” while in the Messages app. It is really annoying and I was wondering if anyone has had any luck getting more information or a resolution on this?

I would like to confirm a few points and trouble shooting I have already completed.

  • signed out and back in on iCloud
  • updated to latest iOS software
  • toggled the messages on and off in iCloud settings
  • rebooted wifi router
  • hard reset phone
  • checked to make sure there isn’t other folders still uploading or downloading to/from icloud (as per other threads asking to check to make sure images or music weren’t still uploading/downloading).
  • also confirmed iCloud restore to my phone has completed because it has already been performing nightly backups to the cloud while I’m sleeping.

I have not made any changes to my iCloud setting prior to backup of my previous iPhone 12 Pro.

The message does go away (after a few minutes) of being connected to power and WiFi.

I am reluctant to wipe the software and start with a fresh restore because previous threads suggest this didn’t resolve the issue, and, it’s really really inconvenient having to do that.

Any help would be fabulous.

Thank you team x

So you are completely correct. However, it didn't work for me. I'll tell you why........

If you own other apple devices apart from your phone, ie. iPad, iMac, Mac etc. You will need to sign out of iMessage on those devices. It is actually what is keeping your phone from finishing it's upload to the iCloud. All due to messages or iMessage.

Once you have signed out on other devices, restart your I phone and open your message or photos app and you will then see the upload to iCloud finish. I am now watching it "downloading messages from iCloud"

No more pause.

*Note : I did not sign out of Apple Watch messages because it is connected to my iPhone and the thread I read said that was the only exception.

Hope this helps all of you!

Hey y'all, I may have found a solution.

  1. Confirm that you have a clear connection to Wi-Fi ready
  2. Turn off iCloud Messages backup (Settings > iCloud > Messages > Toggle off)
  3. Make sure that the Messages app is closed and Wi-Fi is turned on
  4. Power off the device
  5. Once the device is fully powered off, plug it in, and let it automatically power back on.
  6. Allow Wi-Fi to connect.
  7. Enable iCloud backup for Messages (Settings > iCloud > Messages > Toggle on)
  8. Open the Messages app

At this point the "Paused..." notification should change to "downloading..." with a progress bar. Leave it like this, on the charger, and check back up on it periodically. Mine took about 10 minutes, but I am sure this time probably varies widely.

Please let me know if this worked out for anyone else. Thank you!

This worked for me (so far). For reference, my issue started when I noticed messages was off under the iCloud backup settings. When I ticked it on (to backup my messages) that is when it started showing the error. Turned it off again and the error went away. I checked my wife's phone and for some reason her messages backup is off as well. Not sure if maybe an update somewhere down the line turned it off, but I am quite sure most people want their messages backed up. Regardless, this sequence resolved it for me. I had tried turning it off/on before, but apparently it needs to be done right after a reboot as _Flip mentioned.

I think I figured it out. It dawned on me when the Apple update would not download unless I plugged in as opposed to using my MagSafe charger. So when I got the update the message disappeared but I was plugged in and not using my magsafe. So I was sitting here after the update and I have the message again so I took off the magsafe and plugged in normally with a regular charger and the message disappeared because it uploaded to iCloud. So I believe all this Has to do with the fact that we are all charging using MagSafe as opposed to using a regular charger. So my suggestion is if you are using your mag safe take it off and plug into a regular charger and see if that message disappears.

Hi there lbald5,

Thanks for joining us in Apple Support Communities! We understand you're seeing an alert in Messages on your iPhone indicating the upload to iCloud is paused. We're glad you're here, and we can provide some guidance.

To begin, have you checked to see if you have enough iCloud storage available? Learn more here:

Manage your iCloud storage

Next, is Low Power Mode turned on in Settings > Battery? If so, try turning it off and make sure your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi. This link provides details about Low Power Mode:

Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on your iPhone

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers.

Sorry to hear mate. I know myself and a few others had the problem fix itself overnight after a 15.1.1 update. I am still however experiencing drop outs from Apple CarPlay in my Audi which is annoying.

It appears from previous threads going all the way back to 2014, this issue pops up from time to time and there has never been a solid answer or resolution.

It doesn’t help that this is the only way to (maybe) let Apple see some of the user experience since there is no way to provide genuine feedback and or complaints to the company.

hoping things get working for you shortly mate 👌🏼
