Why does Siri no longer edit notes?

I use to be able to be in my kitchen, cooking and ask my Homepod “Hey Siri, please add garlic to my note weekly shopping.” Never had an issue. About a week ago all my devices now respond “sorry, I can not help with that.” And I am prompted on my IPhone to just open notes. Was this feature taken away? It was so handy and quick especially while cooking, but also for quick notes I need while multitasking at work. Any advice is appreciated!

I have found an alternate way to make a grocery list (and other lists) that Siri can edit (add to). But first a quick note that Apple doesn't seem to want to resolve the issue with Notes app.

OK, the way to create a checkbox grocery list that can be edited by Siri, is with the Reminders app:

  • Open Reminders app in Mac or iOS device (I tried creating via Siri but couldn't).
  • In left column, at the bottom, click "+ Add List".
  • Just above a new list was created, give it a name (like Grocery).
  • Now on your iOS device make sure 'Always Listen to "Hey Siri" ' is on (Settings> Accessability> Siri).
  • Say "Hey Siri, add eggs milk butter to grocery list".
  • eggs, milk and butter will be separate lines in you Grocery list!

You can copy the grocery list from Notes and paste into Reminders List.

Hope this helps everyone!

I just finished a long support call with one of the supervisors, who was INCREDIBLY responsive and helpful. After trying all the usual troubleshooting strategies, he reached out to software engineering. It appears that in making some updates/changes with the way that Siri functions, it inadvertently stopped being able to couple to Notes. They know about it, are working on it, and it should be fixed in the near future in a software update (FYI it is NOT fixed yet in 15.1, which I updated to today during the troubleshooting). So there is hope!! :)

I tried this just now, with IOS 15.1, and Siri can create a new note, and give it a title, and insert the contents. That works. But per original poster here, I can't find any combinations where I can add to an existing note.

Having Siri read the last few notes also works.

So now I find I can't e.g. add a new item to a shopping list, its not cool, so is something I'd like please.

Related: there does not seem any "complete" guide on what Siri can do. At best, Apple has lists of the kinds of things you can ask. So not very specific.

Carrie,

You can go online at Apple’s website, search for support. You can do chat, or phone (they call you). I like chat, talk to real person. On the Siri/Notes issue, support was not aware of it, as I called as soon as I discovered, it. They put in request, but I never got reply back. I really wish they bring it back because I used it all the time. Good luck I hope you are able to create a ticket, maybe if enough people scream they might bring it back. Oh, you can always go to physical store and complain there too. Cheers, W.

Same here! with updates, features should get better. This was such a convenient way to quickly add things to your notes without picking the phone up. While working I would think of an item to be added to one of the notes and SIRI used to do that so conveniently. This was a saviour, as most of the time, you think you would want to add something to notes but get stuck with work on hand and then eventually forget adding it.

Pls get this resolved
