Iphone Keyboard Problem Switching In & Out Of “123” keyboard

Hi, how do i stop my keyboard from switching randomly to “123” keyboard when typing in the “abc” keyboard?

I will be typing and it will randomly do it in every sentence i write and im not even close to the “123” button… example: hi h9w -4e yo7 it… it switches in and out. (This whole time typing i have been retyping things because its happening.

I have been having this issue with all previous iphones in the past and never figured it out but this is still happening on my new Iphone 13 Pro Max?! You’d think it wouldn’t happen especially now.

Please help because its soooooo annnoying 🥺

I have been having the same problem on both the iPhone 12 and 13. I went through all the keyboard settings and changed the Haptic Touch from “fast” to “slow”. It is in settings>accessibility>touch>Haptic Touch.

Ever since I made that change it doesn’t switch to numbers while I am typing.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities tanjapop,

We see that you're having an issue with the keyboard on your iPhone. We'd be happy to look into this with you.

First, we'd like to have you restart your iPhone and test to see if the issue remains. If the issue remains, the next thing you can try is to reset your Keyboard Dictionary. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. A pop up should show Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

Restart your iPhone

If the issue remains after trying these steps and you're running the latest version (15.0.1) of software, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support.

You are exactly correct! I’ve switched iPhones and still had the same problem. I realized it is the new design of the iPhone! So I had used apple’s original phone case and had this issue so I switched to a wider case such as casetify and no longer have this issue! I can’t believe it was simple as a new case to fix it. Thank you!

Yes also having the same issue with brand new iPhone 13. While using the keyboard mine will change to numbers key

board or return mid sentence. It appears Apples maximised screen is super sensitive and picks up the moment of your thumbs while holding the phone, far worse than other models.

Whilst, like all other users, I’ll need to get Phone case to ‘resolve’ this issue, it seems ridiculous the UAT didn’t pick up this fairly obvious glitch on a £1k phone.

I’ve researched this a lot, because I’ve been close to just throwing my phone out the window, running over it, and going off the grid because I refuse to switch to Android. What I’ve gathered is that unless you have had this issue for years and adjusted your hand placement, literally everyone has had this issue at one point or another as the screens have creeped closer to the edge. Prior to my 12 pro, I’ve used OtterBox Defender cases and had no problem, but switched to an OtterBox that supports MagSafe charging without removing the case, which is when I started having problems. Just like everyone who swears they weren’t hitting the 123 or caps lock key, I wasn’t intentionally either. And just like everyone else, the problem is my hand hitting the keys by mistake. Sure, you can go buy a thicker case and potentially correct the issue, but shouldn’t we instead hold Apple accountable for the design flaw and insist that they modify the keyboard to perhaps have a built-in buffer so that the outside keys aren’t sitting at the edge of the screen? Seems like millions of users shouldn’t be further inconvenienced by their design flaws 🤷🏻‍♀️

My phone (new iPhone 13) has been doing the same. I find it does it less often when I have my phone case on as opposed to not. I know that doesn’t solve the problem but it makes it less annoying. I did try the keyboard reset, which seemed to make it happen less, but not stop it altogether. 😔. I’ll keep trying the keyboard reset to see if it will clear it up altogether over time… 🤷‍♀️

I am having the same problem as tanjapop. My brand new iPhone 13 pro max’s keyboard is spontaneously switching to number keys without my finger going near the “123” key.

I have tried a keyboard reset. I have also just tried a factory reset - neither of which worked. Is this a bug that could potentially be fixed with a software update or do you think that this could be a problem with the hardware and I need a new phone? Please give me some insight… It is very frustrating!

I never had this problem until I got the 13 pro. I went into the Apple store and had the genius support look into it. They first had me restart the iPhone as a new one and it still had the issue. So I went back and then they had me replace the screen because it was not responding to one part. Then it still did it. I got a new phone and it still did the same. I did all the reset sugggestions on this page and it still did it. I did the hard reset of the keyboard and turned off the phone for a while. We will see if that works. I’m thinking of turning it off all night to see if that is fixed. You think a $1000 iPhone wouldn’t have this kind of problem! All the Apple store genius support people say that they have never seen this problem.

Hi Liza,

This must not be the same issue as mine, I am still having issues as nothing has fixed it.

i will click NO WHERE NEAR the "123" button and it will randomly type in number commas, etc...

this has been going on with my previous phones which were iPhone 6, iPhone xs Max and now this iPhone 13 pro max.

tbh the issue is worse now, before on previous phones it was just randomly clicking number 5 a lot, now its any bloody number or punctuation the "123" keyboard has when I type in "ABC".

UPDATE

i still have not found a solution, apple is not caring about the issue....

also seems as though a lot of people are having the same issue too :(

just a FYI its not my fingers clicking the "123" button, I could be typing on the other side of the screen and it will still switch keyboards.

Its getting so bloody annoying, APPLE PLEASE HELP!!!!!

The same exact thing is happening to me. I had to do a million Genius Bar appointments before they’d finally agree to send me a replacement iPhone 13, and when they did THIS ONE IS DOING IT TOO. Even without backing up From iCloud. I think apple is in major denial about this issue. They’ve not helped at all. I found even a display 13 at the apple store that was doing this.
