Iphone Keyboard Problem Switching In & Out Of “123” keyboard

Hi, how do i stop my keyboard from switching randomly to “123” keyboard when typing in the “abc” keyboard?

I will be typing and it will randomly do it in every sentence i write and im not even close to the “123” button… example: hi h9w -4e yo7 it… it switches in and out. (This whole time typing i have been retyping things because its happening.

I have been having this issue with all previous iphones in the past and never figured it out but this is still happening on my new Iphone 13 Pro Max?! You’d think it wouldn’t happen especially now.

Please help because its soooooo annnoying 🥺

Like many others in this thread have already alluded to, this is most likely happening because the skin on your palm is hitting the ‘123’ button inadvertently while typing. One solution would be to change your hand positioning, but I didn’t want to change something that felt comfortable to me as I was already accustomed to it.

Instead, the fix that I found was to turn on the ‘one-handed keyboard’ setting to ‘Right’ (settings -> general -> keyboard). Another benefit of turning on this setting is that it spaces the keys closer together, which is how my iPhone 12 mini keyboard was like.

I never had this problem until I got the 13 pro. I went into the Apple store and had the genius support look into it. They first had me restart the iPhone as a new one and it still had the issue. So I went back and then they had me replace the screen because it was not responding to one part. Then it still did it. I got a new phone and it still did the same. I did all the reset sugggestions on this page and it still did it. I did the hard reset of the keyboard and turned off the phone for a while. We will see if that works. I’m thinking of turning it off all night to see if that is fixed. You think a $1000 iPhone wouldn’t have this kind of problem! All the Apple store genius support people say that they have never seen this problem.

Liza509 figured it out. She said : "I think I know what the issue is. It’s related to the design of 13. There is not enough gap between keyboard and edge of phone so it’s your hand tapping the shift key that triggers the numbers. Took me a while to figure out *** was going on on my side too. I think if you get a case that provides a little gap, it might help. "

So I tried it out. I think any thick case like a casetify would work. I realized that my finger was touching the edge while I text and that's how I hold my phone. Never had an issue with other iphones I've used for the past ten years. They made the screen maximized which made it super thin on the side.

Having the exact same problem. It just started today, 11/27, seemingly out of nowhere. Keyboard is randomly changing T’s to 5’s and generally glitching. I have the iPhone 13 Pro which I just started using a few weeks ago. Have never had this issue with any other iPhone model, and this keyboard was fine on the current phone until now. Notably, I have been using the same case the entire time I’ve had the phone so it does not seem to be related.

I did a keyboard dictionary reset to no avail, and restarted my phone several times. Hoping there is a resolution soon.

Try ordering a case with a wide side like the casetify. It stopped doing it for me once I got that. The new design is too maximized for the screen and there is very narrow room to the edge of the screen. The way we hold the phone makes you press the shift key without realizing. It seriously worked for me!

I realized it’s not my thumb hitting but 123 button but rather my palm hitting it while I type from my left hand! Does that make sense? That’s why you need the wider case to make more room. It’s just the way certain people tend to hold their phone. Or try texting without your palm hitting the side at all on the left.

Yes also having the same issue with brand new iPhone 13. While using the keyboard mine will change to numbers key

board or return mid sentence. It appears Apples maximised screen is super sensitive and picks up the moment of your thumbs while holding the phone, far worse than other models.

Whilst, like all other users, I’ll need to get Phone case to ‘resolve’ this issue, it seems ridiculous the UAT didn’t pick up this fairly obvious glitch on a £1k phone.

I just had my husband and son stand over my shoulder and watch me type several messages to demonstrate the same problem you’re having. They both noticed that the fleshy part of my hand between my thumb and index finger touches the 123 button when I reach for the letter “T”. I’ve now got my left index and middle fingers straddling my pop socket and I’m no longer having the issue with the keyboard. This took me YEARS to figure out!

This is basically a combination of poor design and the way you hold your phone when you type with both hands. I noticed that if you hold your phone further down on your left hand it will ever so slightly touch the edge of the display when you're reaching across the keyboard, causing it to switch in the middle of typing. The same thing doesn't occur with iPhone 12, just 13. Hope a software update will remedy this someday.

I have this exact problem. But luckily only when using Discord or Twitch app. BTW i have this problem on a Ipad, and i did try out all solutions that came up here. It just does not work. I dont think apple cares at all. I have contacted them multiple times about this but they just dont give a ****. I really hope they all get this annoying problem too. Because than they have to do something. I am so lucky that it only happends in apps for me, but i feel with all 200+ of you who are suffering from this Curse. This is such a annoying thing but there is just no fix for it. This shows again, that Apple does not care about their customers.

I thought it was me! My hubby said “you always have phone issues”. We got the same phone on the same day and he doesn’t have the issue. Course he doesn’t type much. It’s so VERY VERY annoying. A $1000+ phone should not do this. I had a iPhone 7 for years had not issues. Then decided I might need a new ph. But a new ph should not do this. Wish Apple would get their heads out of their *** and fix this I’m sure with their technology they could figure it out. Hopefully soon before I go crazy on this phone.

I came to this post as I was having the same issue. Restart did not work for me but here’s what worked (i’m using Iphone 13):

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard

Then I turned off Check Spelling and Predictive. I typed on Notepad anything random. Then went back to turn on Check Spelling and Predictive. It’s now working perfectly. Maybe it restarted the keyboard this way.

Hope it helps you too.
