Is it possible to reach USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) speed on external USB SSD connected to Mac though USB or Thunderbolt ports? That would mean 2,000 MB/s. For instance, using this SSD:

M1 Macs do not support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps). Only half such speed.
It would depend on the Mac you own. The speed of the USB is hardware dependent, so a mere OS upgrade wouldn't necessarily provide the capability if it doesn't exist in the hardware.
The M1 Mini has USB4 (40Gbps) or USB3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps).

I'm wondering if it's a hw limit (in M1s) or a driver limit (I never loved Apple's usb drivers if compared to Win and Linuxes). I have an M1 MacMini but just a 10 Gbit usb case with a Samsung 970 nvme inside. A waste, technically speaking, but still very very fast.
This is very bad. You therefore need a PC/win or MAYBE next gen M SoCs...

I am on the phone with apple now to find out that very question to enable my 4TB Extreme Pro Shuttle V2 Drives to work. They said YES!!!! They will get the max thru-put of 20GB/S!!!! FINALLY!!

Thunderbolt 4 specifications indicate that USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) support is optional. In particular, the iMac 27-inch (Model Identifier iMac18,3; mid 2017) does not support it. Such SSD connected to it only reaches 1,000 MB/s (not 2,000 MB/s). So, my question is which Mac models support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20 Gbps) to reach 20 Gbps (2,000 MB/s) with such SSD.

I wonder if that is possible with the new MacBook Pro models announced yesterday with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Someone knows?

Specs are one thing and actual speeds are something else so will not know until someone tests the units.
Can't view that link but should be an nvme SSD. I've seen 40 gbps external enclosures for sale on the web (I' m interested too having an nvme Samsung 970). Unfortunately prices are above 150us$.
