Can HOMEPOD speakers be used as a home theater system with 2 used as front speakers and the other 2 as rear speakers?

You can play audio to two stereo pairs, but there is no direct support for quad sound, nor does the default speaker mode for home theater audio support more than a single pair.

We've tried repeatedly to use HPMini as stereo speakers and found that after an hour the sound cuts in & out, in & out. They have great sound, terrible connectivity.
