Getting verification failed trying to erase old iphone as my appleid since changed

Hi, I want to erase an iphone6s (ios 13.1) that I last used a few years ago to give away. When I go to Reset > Erase all content and settings , it says "Documents and data are being uploaded to icloud (why?) If you erase now you will lose documents and data that are being uploaded to icloud" choices are Finish uploading then erase; Erase Now ; Cancel. Since I dont want anything on this phone I chose Erase now. Then enter passcode: which is accepted. Then it says: This will erase all media and data and reset all settings. (Fine, that's what I want). Click erase iphone > 'Are you sure you want to continue?' Click Erase iphone again. Then it asks for AppleID Password "to erase this iphone and remove it from your account" BUT the appleid is the one that I changed about a year ago - this phone still has stored somewhere the old appleid (a defunct email address). I enter the password and click Erase, the password which hasn't changed since my appleid was updated to the new email address. But I get 'Verification Failed There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server' when I enter this password. Also, in my apple account (new email address) I deleted this iphone already.

Thanks! The problem turned out to be the iphone (which was in SOS only mode as no SIM inserted) could not get to the internet (I tried Safari and could not get to any webpage) although Settings > wifi said Connected to my network, but when I looked at my wifi router (admin login) the IP was blocked (as have access control on my netgear router), so when I unblocked it, bingo, Safari works again, and I could go through the steps all over again and this time it accepted the password even though the AppleID was still the old email address (Apple must have kept this somewhere hidden in my appleID account) and therefore verification worked and the iphone has now been erased and is saying 'Hello!' ..
