What does "notifications silenced" mean in Messages?

I’ve been texting with a good friend of mine and all of a sudden at the very bottom of our texting thread it says “🌙 Molly has notifications silenced “. What does this mean? Is she specifically silencing my specific text messages so she doesn’t receive them or the banner doesn’t pop up? She has an iPhone as well and I’ve never seen this message before. My feelings are a bit hurt but I’m not really sure what it means, if someone could explain this to me I would so appreciate it.

Hi vinnetta208,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you’re seeing a notifications silenced message when messaging a friend in Messages app and we’re happy to help.

It looks like your friend uses Focus on their iPhone. When a person sets up Focus on their iPhone, then you might see a message displayed in the Messages app that says [contact name] has notifications silenced. This means that the person you’re messaging has their notifications silenced. Please note that you can still notify your friend if it’s urgent. Learn more about Focus here: Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Best regards.

What original problem oh my God the ******* message doesn’t go away yes we know it’s glitchy bugs different phones different models different chipsets, Different carriers some suggestions obviously aren’t gonna work for every single person here backup the phone on a computer wipe out the phone log off of every device restore your phone go back to DND make sure that it’s off anything related to it is turned off and that’s it. That’s it if it doesn’t work then obviously Apple really needs to get on the ball nothing you can do from this point just deal with it

I have three devices, two that are not updated with the focus mode and one that has been telling people that I have notifications silenced even when I turn off my "Focus Status". My phone was on 14.1.1 (No focus mode), my computer on Mojave and my ipad is on 15.4.1 and sharing status with focus mode is turned off.

My family is not happy with me, please show me how to fix.

A friend of mine with an iPhone same as mine can’t message as when I sent message he’d get it in green but then messages he sent me didn’t come through at all and my messages to him before were blue both being on iPhones but on screen I get half moon and that his notifications are silenced how do we fix this he says he’s done nothing and all I’ve done is update

Hello All,

I am having this same problem in Messages ([person] has notifications silenced)and can see a message on my wife's phone that says I have notifications silenced when I do not.

Details:

  • Both phones (iPhone 13's) are running iOS 15.4.1.
  • On my wife's phone in messages, at the bottom of our thread it says "...has notifications silenced" (see pic.) most recently confirmed at 11am this morning.
  • Messages received on my phone from my wife produce no sound.
  • On my phone Focus->Do Not Disturb, (a) my wife is on a whitelist, (b) I have a schedule set for 9:30PM-8:00AM, (c) Share Across Devices is disabled. (see pics.)
  • On my MacBook, DND is disabled and Share Across Devices is disabled.

Attached are some pics...

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have deleted every available Focus on both of my devices. I have DND turned OFF. I have restarted both my devices. The "notifications silenced" message is still being sent to my HUSBAND and MOTHER. What in the heck am I supposed to do? This is ridiculous. I never wanted this stupid "feature" and now I am being forced to navigate it, and it doesn't even appear to work. (The reason this started was that my mother was seeing this message and kept telling me, even though I told her I hadn't turned anything on. Her contact was already somehow in the "allowed" list, so she shouldn't have been seeing it anyway.) Please help me! This is so annoying.

For crying out loud Apple please stop messing with our devices - you charge arm and a leg for them so let us do what we want to do with this $1200 junk. I have no watch and the iPhone keeps asking me to pair it and i have focus off but it keeps telling people i silenced them so for the love of God leave us alone. We have enough problems in life to sit down and try to fix your bugs for you.
