What does "notifications silenced" mean in Messages?

I’ve been texting with a good friend of mine and all of a sudden at the very bottom of our texting thread it says “🌙 Molly has notifications silenced “. What does this mean? Is she specifically silencing my specific text messages so she doesn’t receive them or the banner doesn’t pop up? She has an iPhone as well and I’ve never seen this message before. My feelings are a bit hurt but I’m not really sure what it means, if someone could explain this to me I would so appreciate it.

Hi vinnetta208,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you’re seeing a notifications silenced message when messaging a friend in Messages app and we’re happy to help.

It looks like your friend uses Focus on their iPhone. When a person sets up Focus on their iPhone, then you might see a message displayed in the Messages app that says [contact name] has notifications silenced. This means that the person you’re messaging has their notifications silenced. Please note that you can still notify your friend if it’s urgent. Learn more about Focus here: Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Best regards.

Apple Watch

Many people have talked about checking all devices. I have gone over my iphone, ipad and macbook air multiple times without success fixing this problem. Then looked at my watch for the time and saw the moon at top of it. Somehow I had turned on the DND on Apple watch and it silenced everything. So dont forget checking your Watch also.

I'm not sure why you're responding to me. I do not have a problem with Focus or DND.

I had the same problem, but I managed to figure that out what you have to do is go to settings, and then click on do not disturb and in that you must’ve turned on the every day schedule focused on, you will have to delete that and then go back to your message if it says the same notification saying it’s silent get out of your message turn off your phone turn it back on and you should have it gone. So when that day is in blue meaning it will say that the focus on that days is on so tap it, so yeah shows gray not blue and then go back to your message to see if it’s gone and if it’s still not gone turn off your cell phone and turn it back on and it should be gone. Hopefully this helps.

Sorry for my previous message it worked for a few minutes and then I had the same problem but I think I just figured it out 100% if you have a laptop check that do not disturb on your laptop your laptop I have a Mac air on the upper right there’s two buttons Top and bottom right next to the next to the search glass between Siri do you have a window like that and on the left-hand side you will have the do not disturb click on that and on the right there’s another do not disturb switch you where you can toggle left or right underneath that you have apps that that’s running through the on do not disturb. And on the bottom of that there’s a plus and a minus sign minus all of them and if you have anything under the do not disturb on the left, like personal smile, work delete it. also on the right hand side you should see options. Click on it and allow calls and text from everyone. I don’t know how this happened but I manage to get it undone. I hope this helps.

This is of the problem I’m having, and I’ve had it periodically prior to focus being around. It just shows the silenced icon. It doesn’t have any verbiage it’s not sending any verbiage. It’s a setting on my phone around that contact and I don’t know how to get rid of it. On the subject of focus, I can’t stand it. I wish apple would go back to the “do not disturb” method of silencing the phones during certain hours. Focus is overly complex for what it’s usually used for, not intuitive, not user friendly.

The notice that is the subject of this thread didn't exist before Focus was introduced.

It sounds as if you have a different problem. But, it's not clear to me what you mean by "a setting on my phone around that contact". What setting?

You can do exactly that with Focus. Go to Settings>Focus>Do Not Disturb. Do not put any contacts or apps in "Allow notifications from". Do not do anything with "Customize Screens". Go to "Set A Schedule", tap "Add Schedule" and set up your hours during which you do not want to be contacted. Do not select anything for "Smart Activation".

Delete all of the other Focus profiles except for DND. Focus will now work exactly the way it did before.

Thank you so much, k_p95, this worked for me!

  • Settings > Messages > Allow Messages to Access > disable Focus.

  • Settings > Focus > Share Across Devices should be disabled if you do not want your current or active Focus status to reflect across devices signed into the same Apple ID.

  • Settings > Focus > click on the affected Focus > Focus Status > Share Focus Status should be disabled.

  • Settings > Privacy > Focus > Messages should be disabled.
