homepod makes loud pop and disconnects from AirPlay after upgrading to iOS 15

I upgraded my HomePod to iOS 15 and since then have had an issue with it making a loud popping noise (loud enough to wake my dog) and then disconnect from my iPad. I am using AirPlay and connect to both HomePod and HomePod mini. All devices are running current iOS 15 versions. There is no issue with the mini. I am able to reconnect the HomePod after about 3 minutes.

Anyone else having this issue.

HomePod, 15

Mine as well. With HomePod OS 15 my full sized HomePods started making that random popping sound, when they were t even being used. After the last updates to those and APPLE TV I set my HomePods up as default sound. They keep randomly disconnecting and reconnecting to my Eero 6 Pro network, they show up as private devices with a random MAC address that is different each time, there’s now a list of about 8 or 9 in my Eero offline list as this keeps happening. When it does they may reconnect, or one may reconnect and the other will not. This is not happening to my HomePod Mini’s that are also up to date and being used with 4th gen Apple TV’s as well.

So disabling Siri did not solve the problem. Happened this morning after only an hour of playing. Disappointing is an understatement. How do you make a product, charge a massive fee, then stop supporting it? Steve Jobs would be rolling over in his grave.

Apple needs to come up with a plan other than taking it to the Genius Bar.

The OP “solved” it. Apple does not read these forums. It’s likely not to be resolved because HomePods have been discontinued.

mine are acting up as well. One of my HomePods no longer stays in stereo pair but decides it wants to be a stereo pair when announcing a timer or an alarm, a loud echo is coming from both of them but it won’t airplay to them anymore in stereo. One will not play.. Today when I had teenage guests over for Christmas my music started coming through on their iPhones and they started turning it off and they had full control of my music which had never happened before. Yet it wasn’t showing up on my iPhone home screen to be able to control it.

For the popping sound try unplugging them for over 24 hours and then do a Factory Reset by pressing the top method.

Same problem with my OG HomePod. Pop noises occured after installing OS 15 and get the HomePod to do a restart. Still there, now updated to 15.2. BUT I have other pops after every interaction with my HomePod (talking to Siri or streaming music via AirPlay or the HomePod itself). These pops are more quiet and don't cause a restart. They don't cause any "panicful"-logs as well. Do your HomePods have those quiet pops too?

Hello jdo_apple

Was just wondering, and didn’t know who else to ask, plus you’re a community specialist; are you or someone else able to confirm whether or not Apple actually read these threads and take them into consideration?

I read somewhere that Apple do, and in the footnotes it says;

“Apple may provide or recommend responses as a possible solution based on the information provided…”

Thanks

These discussions are monitored and proctored. I took my HomePods to the apple store. At first they wanted to send them off for testing. After reviewing all the details and calls to support they ordered replacements. Still waiting for the replacements.. you need to open a support call before taking the devices to the Genius Bar.

I've been working with a senior advisor for 3 weeks on this issue :)

We need an update that will fix this issue, 100% Apple Software issue.

Senior advisor will ask you to run tests, reset device, and then suggest replacement (because that is the only option they 'have available'). If you want a new HomePod, go for it. But it does not solve the issue.

Praying for an update here soon, in the meantime, we should ALLLLL be contacting Apple regularly about this.

I continue to push for a solution with the engineering team now, sharing my logs with them as the issue occurs.

Thanks jjones17, appreciated

Don’t worry, I’ll persist alright, and I don’t want replacements either

Am pretty sure it’s software like you say - thought as much from the start - I’m no expert but am quite savvy sometimes - it’s fairly obvious it’s the software playing up the CPU (logs)

Have you noticed how it turns itself up sometimes to full whack when it’s idle - that may have something to do with it also (pop)

Yes at least they are acknowledging 🤞🏻

That’s strange, mine restart by themselves as ‘reset counter’ straight after the pop, then reconnect after a min or so with no probs

Mind you I’m usually using Apple TV default out which I’ve never heard pop - I’ve only heard / seen log for a pop when it’s not on tv out - in other words on AirPlay only from the Apple TV or otherwise

This might be where the volume issue occurs…

Check the high volume scenario if you get a chance - in control centre and home app - I’ve noticed it more when you change AirPlay output, especially from Apple TV

"Senior advisor will ask you to run tests, reset device, and then suggest replacement (because that is the only option they 'have available'). If you want a new HomePod, go for it. But it does not solve the issue. "

That's what my Senior Advisor did with me on the phone, too. As this did not fix it, she suggested to go a Apple Store (with my support case) and ask for replacement. But she could not guarantee that this will happen for free as the device is older than 2 years.

I am still struggling to accept that this is a software issue. I hear all the Pros and Cons.

But one of my stereo pair is not having this issue, the other one does. So it might be a combination of sw/hw... no clue..

I’m convinced it’s a software issue. I have 2 HomePods - one bought many years ago when they first came out and the second in May this year. I notice this problem more often with the 2nd one but it’s also happened occasionally with the 1st one. The only common change has been iOS 15.

(I’ve tried resetting the 2nd speaker and plugged it into a different socket - problem still happens)

I am from Germany and have 7 Homepods (the big ones) and bought them over the past three years. I really invested in these and set them up all over the house and use them with airplay over Ipad or Mac Mini or Iphone. The last one I bought shortly they decided to sunset them. This year the popping sound appeared on all 7 randomly but at least once a day. Very load sometimes even if they are not playing. This is very annoying and of course shows a malfuncion (either hard or software). I was a huge Apple supporter but now I am really considering to turn completely away from apple. Sorry: 7!!! Homepods with the same issue and no solution. Is this how Apple is supposed to tread customers? Thank you.
