Apple Watch tracking is so inaccurate that it is almost useless

I try to use my Apple Watch for workout tracking but its distance and other readings are sometimes almost 30% off (example attached). This is true for readings on indoor AND outdoor runs the latter of which should at the very least be augmented by gps data (I bring my phone always). This is problematic as the logged workouts inform many other estimates in the Health app.

It’s been recommended that I erase calibrated data and recalibrate — I’ve now done this 3 times. The readings remain so incredible poor that I end up using a third party app which obviates the need for the Apple Watch in the first place.
