printer scanners

I have the new iMac with the M1 chip. My Cannon printer/scanner is connected and the printer works but the scanner does not. My dashboard uses "image capture" but when trying to use it I am told to update the app by calling the developer. Is there another way?

You can clearly see that they are Applications under the Kind category.

The .app extension will only show if you have selected to show extensions in Finder> Preferences> Advanced.

Before you started using your scanner with the new iMac did you download the latest drivers and software

or your printer/ scanner. As you can see from your screenshot the dates for the CanonIJScanner.apps are

2015 and 2019, which predate macOS Big Sur.

What exact model of printer/ scanner is your Canon.

Go to an official Canon support website, input the exact model of your printer/ scanner, that should

open up the support page for your model.

For example,

https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/product_ranges/printers/pixma/

Make sure the operating selector is set for macOS 11. Big Sur.

You should then see the appropriate drivers and software.

Download and install them.

Restart the mac and try again.

OR, Reset The Printing System,

Reset the Mac printing system to solve a problem - Apple Support

After having removed the printer from the list and re-added it go to the

Default Printer and select your Canon, this should force the mac to contact

Canon and download the necessary drivers for your model and macOS version.

Restart your mac.

Now follow the instructions I gave you earlier.

Yes it is entirely likely those drivers will work, will do no harm giving it a shot.

Did you try the /Library/Image Capture/Devices procedure I mentioned before.

Click on this link for your Canon printer,

https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/inkjet-multifunction/ts-series-inkjet/ts5020-black/pixma-ts5020?subtab=downloads-drivers

Make sure the operating system selector is set to macOS Big Sur.

You will see there is a ICA driver for the scanner, then click on Software and Firmware.

Download those that are relevant to you and then install them.

Restart your mac and see if it will now function.

Ok, I have a Canon TS6420 printer/scanner, which I purchased late this summer of 2021. Electronic devices are hard to come by due to pandemic (meaning sold out or older ones available).

I set up my Canon wireless. I can print to my heart's content, even front and back. I try to scan; I keep getting error of device connection. In troubleshooting, I heeded the advice to update my software. My software is up to date on my Mac. I even contacted Apple support, which was no help. I was given link to trouble shoot (I did not have to add my printer/scanner device, because it already was.) Then, the support told me restart both my printer/scanner AND my Mac, which essentially closed my chat. The support team member knew that and told me to contact again with my case ID if I still had issue. I do not think this person understood that I have been doing that multiple times during these last few weeks, power off and power on.

SO what really worked for me was...I went into Walmart and bought a printer cable. From there, I had zero issue of opening scanner and scanning 10 pages right off the bat. The "air" or wireless sense of Canon and Mac was the issue. I previously had an HP and scanning was borderline frustrating. I just wish APPLE would just make their own printer to communicate back and forth, instead of going through companies like HP and Canon. We have wireless keyboard, mouse and air pods...Apple just needs to make a printer/scanner that goes straight through to the Mac.

Go to your you User/Home/Library/Printers folder and see if you have any Canon apps there. If there are Control (right) - click on it and select Open from the contextual menu.

Next, do the same with the Macintosh HD/Library/Printers/Canon folder. You may have to do a search in the Canon folder for any file that ends in ".app". If you find any do the Control - click or right click on the app and select Open from the contextual menu. Click Open in the next window also for each app.
