Apple Mail works only in Safe Mode (MacBook, Catalina 10.15.7)

Ok, so suddenly Apple Mail (version 13.4, btw) cannot connect to any of my email accounts. Connection Doctor says IMAP connection failed for each of my email accounts.

However, they all work perfectly fine in Safe Mode.

I vaguely recall a solution in which you delete one or more .plist files which may have somehow become corrupted but I haven't found specifics for such a solution yet despite searching for awhile now.

So, whoever among you is the smartest of them all, please reply with your sage advice ;) and thanks.

On October 15, you installed "AdGuard", and suddenly Mail ceased to be able to connect to your accounts.

Putting one and one together it seems extremely likely that AdGuard is somehow blocking access to your e-mail.

I recommend uninstalling, restarting and seeing if access to your e-mail is restored.

The fact the Apple Mail function but only in Safe Mode indicates there is no need to remove the plist files nor are they possibly corrupted.

Safe Mode does several things including Only Load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. It also eliminates Third Party Software, extensions and Fonts from loading.

Immediately glean, there is something not right in the User Account Or some Third Party software is interfering with the normal operation of the OS.

There are two route to isolate where this issue is. One is create a new User account for testing purposed only and test if the issue is presented when booting in Normal Mode. If not presented - the issue is in the original user account.

The second route is Suggest downloading the Application  Etrecheck  https://etrecheck.com  directly from a well respected ASC Contributor.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

This includes AntiVirus, Cleaners, Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.

Thank you for the quick replies!

Luis Sequeira1: Excellent catch. I have actually been running AdGuard for some time but just ran an upgrade on 10/15, and had forgotten about it until your message. Yes, AdGuard was the reason Mail could not connect to any of my email accounts (using IMAP).

Hopefully the following further info will be helpful for others… I isolated the problem with AdGuard as follows:

  • Open AdGuard preferences
  • Select "Network" menu option
  • Deselect "Automatically Filter Applications" option (note that AdGuard gives a further option to deselect individual applications, but I don't think this option is necessary for me :)
  • Problem solved, Mail suddenly works again (insert party emojis here ;)

Thanks again!!

P.S. - AdGuard application version 2.6.0.1041 release (CL-1.8.214, DNS-1.6.54)

Epilogue: I heard back from AdGuard support. They are aware of this issue, are currently working on its fix, and provided the following workaround instructions in the meantime (disable AdGuard protection for email only):
