Are my Facebook Messenger messages being read?

While this issue is with a 3rd party, non-Apple app, I'll try to shed some light on the situation :)

It is actually completely possible to disable read-receipts with iMessage and many other messaging apps on iPhones and many customers do opt to do so to preserve some privacy so it's not an iPhone thing, but rather a Facebook thing. You will know the message is sent if you see a hollow checkmark icon next to the message. It has been delivered to the recipient if that check mark icon is filled in with blue. You will know that they have read your message when a small duplicate of their profile photo appears below your message. From what I can see, Facebook has removed the ability for customers to have control over rather they send read-receipts so you should be getting read-receipts when your messages are read unless the recipient is using a crafty method involving Aeroplane Mode to hide these read-receipts.

As a personal opinion, I would heaving recommend that you both move your conversation to an alternative like Apple's iMessage or Telegram, both of which are much more privacy-respecting alternatives to Facebook Messenger and ultimately give you more control over what you do and don't share with each other and the maker of the apps.

Furthermore, Read Receipts can be enabled/disabled, however, this is only applicable to the Apple Messages app and related iMessages. SMS messages on an iPhone do not have any Read Receipts associated with them.
