iPhone 13 camera not focusing when capturing a photo 8-10 cm away

My iPhone 13 camera is not focusing properly. It doesn't focus when it is around 8-10 cm away from the object for a close up shot. Is everybody with an iPhone 13 experiencing this problem? I went to my local store which diagnosed my device and they said that there is no problem. But I am very suspicious. So does anybody else have this problem? Can anybody confirm this problem?

It has nothing to do with your point of view. It has EVERYTHING to do with what your iPhone 13 is capable of. And what you want and expect it to do, it can't. I didn't design the new cameras. I don't work for Apple. No one here works for Apple on this user to user only forum.

But I was well aware of the difference between iPhone 13 and 13 Pro cameras and I chose the Pro because its cameras are more advanced than iPhone 13. There should be advantages to paying more for a product. And this is one area the Pro's outperform the standard 13.

I understand you're hoping it's a software thing. I can assure you it's not. iPhone 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max did not have Macro photography abilities. People complained and Apple added Macro to the 13 Pro models this year. It's just not going to come to a standard 13. Sorry.

See this link and compare the features between iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. You'll notice the 13 Pro specifically says Macro Photography, which the 13 does not --> https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/

If you wanted to be able to take macro photos, you should have invested in the 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max. iPhone 13 does not have macro photo capability, so it stands to reason your phone can't focus 8 - 10cm from a subject. iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have Macro Photo capabilities and are perfectly capable of focusing that close.

Your camera isn't defective. It just doesn't have the Macro Photo capability of the Pro models.

Instead of trying to get your camera to do what it is not capable of doing, take the photo further from the subject when you see it is completely focused. Then edit the photo after taking the picture to zoom into the area of the subject you wanted to see clearly. iPhone 12 Pro Max didn't have Macro Photo capabilities and this is what I did if I need a close up picture.

I now have 13 Pro Max and it takes great Macro Photos.

If you've had your phone less than 14 days and you really want to be able to take Macro shots, return the phone for full refund and upgrade to a 13 Pro.

I can't answer why questions. I don't work for Apple and this is a user to user only forum. Suffice to say, the cameras in iPhone 13 are way more sophisticated than iPhone 6 but Apple didn't engineer Macro Photography into the camera system on iPhone 13. They did engineer Macro Photography into iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.

And as I said, if you need Macro Photography, you need iPhone 13 Pro. Or use the suggestion I provided which will work as I did it on my 12 Pro Max, which also does NOT include Macro Photography.

I have a very expensive Nikon DSLR camera, which cost a LOT more money than my iPhone. If I want to take close up photos, I had to buy a Macro Lens for my DSLR.

All the iPhone 12 variants have the macro capability except the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is because there is a problem in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. All the iPhone are obligated to have the micro photo capability. The iPhone 12 Pro Max not having it is a problem in the device. Don’t try to say that it isn’t supposed to have the micro photo capability at all. The iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 SHOULD have the micro photo capability, but they don’t. So apple needs to fix this.

OK.....let's remove semantics from this. Whether anyone can agree whether close ups are macro or not is semantic as it relates to the difference between iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro.

I do fully understand people have an expectation that iPhone 13 should be able to focus (using the OP example) 8 - 10cm from a subject. To be as clear as possible, iPhone 13 is INCAPABLE of doing that.

On the other hand, iPhone 13 Pro is CAPABLE of focusing that close. And Apple calls this Macro Mode. A feature iPhone 13 lacks and CANNOT have.

I hope that is clear enough for you? No one is getting worked up here. Dogcow and a few others of us have tried to explain the difference between the two phones, whether anyone understands, we can't help with that.

Since this answer is clearly not the answer you want, take your complaint to Apple. They designed iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. They decided what features each phone gets. They decided the Pro models have more features and better cameras than iPhone 13. As such, the Pro models cost more and do more. One usually get's more if one buys a higher line product. To expect a Mercedes C class to do all the things a Mercedes E or S Class does is never going to happen. And that is the case with iPhone 13 versus iPhone 13 Pro. You decide which features matter to you and you purchase the device which best meets your needs.

Ps: The grass felt nice. Thanks! :-)

If you believe there is something wrong with your phone, have it examined:

Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

If you are that unhappy with it and purchased it between November 1 and December 25, you have until January 8 to return it for a refund; you normally have 14 days.

There have been few to no other reports of the phone app freezing or other apps "shutting off," so it sounds like it could be a memory issue in your specific phone.

iPhone 13 lacks the same Ultra Wide camera iPhone 13 Pro has. As such, iPhone 13 cannot focus as close as the Ultra Wide camera on iPhone 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max. It has nothing to do with software being disabled. The two phones simply do not have the same camera hardware.

iPhone 13 Camera Specifications:

  • Dual 12MP camera system: Wide and Ultra Wide cameras
  • Wide: ƒ/1.6 aperture
  • Ultra Wide: ƒ/2.4 aperture and 120° field of view

iPhone 13 Pro Max Camera Specifications:

  • Pro 12MP camera system: Telephoto, Wide, and Ultra Wide cameras
  • Telephoto: ƒ/2.8 aperture
  • Wide: ƒ/1.5 aperture
  • Ultra Wide: ƒ/1.8 aperture and 120° field of view

They are simply NOT the same cameras.

Please point me into the direction where I can find documented the physical limitation of smartphone lenses focusing closer than 15 cm from the subject. With the risk of repeating something which you have read a lot of times by now from different users: previous iterations of the main camera on iPhones took close ups, and they were actually quite good (eg. iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone X).

Also, please show me an official documentation or statement from Apple's side which specify that "iPhone 13 is NOT software disabled from taking Macro Photos".

If you can't offer any official statements on any of the above two matters, than your words are pure opinions and speculations and you should stop from spreading falsehoods.

And I will say again: smartphones (S M A R T P H O N E S /ˈsmɑːtfəʊns/) do not need an Ultra Wide camera to take closeups.
