Notifications, email pushing

I recently had to put behind my third BlackBerry and now have an iPhone 12 Mini. BB legacy phones will soon no longer work. I am struggling with 2 issues.

First, I have a hearing impairment, and iPhone notifications do not cut it. My BB had a loud notification "BING" and a flashing (for about 5 minutes) red LED light on the front. I have my iPhone set up with the loudest notification I can find, plus the flashlight coming on. Totally inadequate.

Second....email "push". I have my server email (not web email) set up on the iPhone. I have my settings on PUSH, and set for every 15 minutes (I see "automatic" works only on Wi-Fi. When on "automatic" I do not get emails at all when away from Wi-Fi and on data. Even with Wi-Fi my emails are coming to the phone in anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Unacceptable. My BB received emails pretty much immediately. I guess a BB is more of a business, or professional phone.

I have not gotten some important emails in a timely basis. Whats up here? Also, why do my email settings show TWO accounts.....one being iCloud?? According to my settings, iCloud is "push" but my server mail only has "fetch" or manual.

Thanks for your help, anyone!

Actually iCloud and Yahoo mail (in certain instances) can be pushed, all others are Fetched. Exchange accounts used to be able to be pushed and some Google but that has been changed. If you are using Exchange mail look for a mail app that will work with that.

The 5 minute flashing alerts and red light are a Blackberry thing used with their proprietary network. You aren't going to find a smartphone that can do the same thing. If the flashing light and notification are not loud enough for you make sure you keep your email and message apps on your home screen and periodically check for the badge updating the count. As an option you could get an Apple Watch and turn of prominent haptics and it will tap you on the wrist when there is an incoming message.

Hi Deke38,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. Though we can't offer additional advise on the notifications not being loud enough, we can help you to get a better understanding of the other things you mentioned.

As far as the unknown iCloud email address, is this the Apple ID you created when you activated your device? You can see your Apple ID email address by going to Settings > Tap your name.

To get a better understanding of how mail fetching works, please see the section titled "Check Mail Fetch and Notification settings" by visiting the below link.

You said you have your own server but unless you are directly connected to a primary email computer on the internet. Most people who have done this either use Exchange (Microsoft) or Google. So who are you using?

Blackberry maintained a closed proprietary email service using their servers rather than the internet so it was easier. I suggest you call AppleCare or make a Genius Bar appointment and have them walk you through it. This is most likely to be a problem with your server, I know countless people who use Fetch mail and do not have the problems you do.

I turned 71 Saturday.

What is an exchange server? If you mean my internet provider, yes. My email comes to my laptop through Microsoft Outlook.....the program that comes with Microsoft Office......not a web based email. On my Blackberry, Tablet, and iPhone, my mail comes through the mail apps provided with the devices, with my server mail account set up on those. Only the iPhone has been a problem.

When I mention my server, I mean my Internet Service Provider. Is this not a primary email computer?

I do have a Gmail account, so I have added that to my phone. Will that help? It shows up in Settings....Mail...Accounts now.

I wish I could call somewhere for help but with my hearing impairment I do not use a phone....unless there is a chat option.

Belated Happy Birthday.

I have sent myself emails from my laptop and they are still not fetching on the iPhone. It has been over a half hour now

Regardless of Blackberry servers, I also have a Samsung tablet and my emails come through quickly on it.

I see now, Genius Bar has a chat option.....will give that a try

Thank you.

You are not very helpful in solving your problem and don't appear to have much experience with technology so some of the things I said before you said you had a Gmail account no longer apply.

You can't add the Gmail app to your iPhone through your browser. You can access Gmail webmail using your browser. You need to open the App Store icon on your iPhone, use the search icon to look for Gmail and download the Gmail app from there. When it is installed open it and it will walk you through adding your gmail account to it and set it up as push mail.
