iPhone 13 pro voice cuts and the other person can't hear me

I have an issue where my iphone 13 pro voice cuts out on speakerphone calls, not for me, but for the person on the other phone. Anyone else having this happen? The speaker grilles are clear.

So, after my trip to ATT did not help the issue, I went to the Apple store. The first diagnostic check did not show anything, so I called the “genius” on speakerphone and she was able to hear the problem for herself in person. After that a second diagnostic found the cellular radio was defective. They replaced the 5-week old phone at the Apple store. So far, (day 2), it seems to be working well. If you call Apple support or go to the store, have them listen to you on speakerphone. Worked for me.

Hi, I just got a new iPhone 13 Pro Max and it's been a nightmare with the audio cutting out from Day 1. Every. Single. Call. Doesn't matter where I am or with whom I might be speaking. I've had the phone for just under a month. For long stretches during conversations, my phone's audio will cut out so that callers can't hear me at all. At first I thought it was the other callers, and then I thought it was the speakerphone on my phone (as some other people have thought on this forum). I use my speakerphone A LOT in my business. I tried removing the case, which had no effect, and resetting my Network settings, which required entering in all my passwords again. I then tried using only my car's bluetooth, and then I tried using only my iPhone earbuds. Nothing changed. I set up a Genius bar appointment for today, but then I read on this forum that many people had their phones swapped out, only to have the same problem. Since noise cancelling cannot be turned off anymore, that was not an option for me.

This morning I had the idea to eliminate the 5G option on my phone. I went into Settings, Cellular, and Cellular Data Options, and Set Voice & Data to LTE. Then, I set my phone to Data Mode "Standard." I had already turned off Data Roaming earlier this month to see if that did anything.

For the last 3 calls, the problem hasn't reappeared. I currently have Data Roaming toggled off, Voice & Data set to LTE, and Data Mode set to Standard. I hope this helps someone!!!!

Your case is covering up 1 or more of your mics. There are 3 of them. One at the top on the face where you listen to calls. One on the bottom edge (actually there’s two) where you listen to music and speakerphone calls. And one on the back under the right camera. If any of these are covered by your case your receiver is likely to hear muffled sound. I bought a waterproof case and all the mics were covered up and when I took the case off my phone was perfectly fine.

Apple Support has actually reached out to me regarding this issue and helping them to recreate it so they can get it figured out. We are going to setup profiles on our phones so we can mimic this. It’s a noise cancellation issue happening, I work in construction and my wife has an iPhone 13 pro and when she is on speaker(on her phone) talking to me and there’s loud noises on my end or if I talk, it will cut her voice out. If I hit mute on my phone while she is talking she comes across perfectly clear because it eliminates all the noise coming thru from my end, if I unmute then problem is right back. Give it a try. Not a microphone issue, problem with noise cancellation that can’t be turned off when on speaker, when she is on a headset or using the phone to her ear it doesn’t have this problem. I’ve tried and tested this multiple ways and times.

After 5 months of almost every call cutting in and out and about 100 hours on tech support calls and Apple Genie appointments, I found the fix - the ONLY thing that worked

.

I bought the lightning connect wired headset from Apple for $19.00 free delivery - they are called EarPods with lightning connector.

Every call using this headset is clear - sure it is old school with an $1100 phone but, it beats holding the phone or using my AirPods and having sound cut in and out. BTW here is what I had tried prior - new $299 extender (free from Verizon), new AirPods, 2 new phones (bought 2 swapped 2) and none of it worked. Went to Apple store they ran a test on new phone said nothing is wrong with it.

Having the same problem. My voice cuts out all the time while using facetime, skype, whatspp calls and even phone calls but only while using the speaker.

It is a problem of the noise cancellation that is EXTREMELY sensible.

if the other part in the call produce the minimum sound while you are talking your voice will cut out, i have tried it and that is the problem, and it is because the noise cancellation. If the other person is muted, your voice won’t cut out, you can try it.

I have gone to apple multiple times and they can’t find any solution, they even gave me a new Iphone 13 pro and the problem is still happening. Finally they told me to wait for a software update…

Basically I have a phone that cost 1000$ which I can’t use for videocalls or for phone calls with hands-free…

I hope that apple will fix it soon…

I had a chance to experiment with multiple iPhone 13 pro max’s and I found that mag safe cases makes this problem worse and none mag safe cases distort the sound less but the best case is no phone case at all but even then the problem still exist and different iPhone 13s are different in the severity. This definitely sounds like a design or hardware issue. I am not sure if iPhone 12 Pro max’s have the same position mic’s but this problem doesn’t exist for them.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro and have the same issue. Constant problem on speaker. Apple says they have "not heard of the problem" and has no interest in doing much. 25 years of being an Apple user. I am about over it. Their policy is now so unfriendly. It's super different if you are on headphones of any kind. Instantly changes. Otherwise, you have to orient the phone exactly perfectly and have it right next to your mouth.

I am on Verizon and have played with the settings on the phone, reset all network settings, and jumped through typical troubleshooting hoops. It is also slightly worse with the Native Apple Leather Case.

In conclusion:

  1. Mic is problematic
  2. Apple does not care - at all

There are many suggestions throughout this thread. Make sure you have the latest iOS version. Change your sim to eSim. You can do this with AT&T but not Verizon or Comcast I don't think. Did you put a "waterproof" case on your phone? Take it off. It covers the microphone holes. There are other suggestions but these were the most common fixes I've read.

I have a 12 Pro Max that had the same issues. I had an appointment to go to Apple this weekend but before going I removed my otter box and spoke for 30 minutes with the person complained the most about my phone. He didn't complain or hear issues once...and I didn't tell him I removed the case until I was ready to get off the phone. I think, in my situation, the case may have been the problem. I ordered a new case with less protection and a screen protector. We'll see how it goes. For now, it seems to be working. I thought the update worked last time. It didn't. We'll see if this sticks.

Not only does APPLE know about it but all of their Verizon dealers know it’s not the iPhone 13 Pro it’s all the franchising of the cases that are not correctly designed for the microphone at the bottom possibly even at the top that I’ve been told from the Verizon dealer I bought my phone from take it out of the case… Now I have also bought a pelican and a OtterBox case so none of them are manufactured correctly for the iPhone it’s not the phone it’s the case! So how much money are they going to lose if all these cases are done incorrectly design wise? They’re not talking about it but you need to

Yes, 5G is still too spotty where I am and LTE is truly the only option. Something else I tried and I THINK it helps the cutting out when on speakerphone/FaceTime problem: turn on the Background Sound feature under the “Hearing” setting (a setting not available on my iPhone Xs). It’s the ear-shaped icon in the Control Center. If you select the “Balanced Noise” sound and set at approximately 15/50 level, it plays a low and barely noticeable white noise sound and I think because there is constant noise it eliminates some of the chop/glitching caused by what seems to be an overly sensitive noise cancelling threshold (that you can no longer turn off on the iPhone 13). Also, as others have said, when on FaceTime change the microphone setting (you can only see this setting while actually on FaceTime call). The middle option seems to work best for me.

As an update to my previous post (turning off 5 G to make a SLIGHT improvement)….

I had complained about this new phone to Verizon and it was within the initial 30 days. They offered to send a new phone. I waited, preferring to try some other fixes to see if anything improved. I was also skeptical it would make any difference, as so many users here reported the same issues on a replacement phone.

Then a friend of mine got a new iPhone 13 Pro Max, same model as mine. He primarily uses the speakerphone for work, as do I. His new phone didn’t have the problem.

I then went back to Verizon under my original ticket and they sent me a new phone. This new phone doesn’t have the problem. That was evident from the first call.

I have saved my identifying numbers from the first phone…..perhaps there was a large batch that had this issue, and the newer batches don’t. I don’t know if there is any way for us afflicted users to compare our serial numbers on the problem phones…..

I am almost certain that the radio antennas are/were bad.
